Would you still vacation in Florida? Why or why not?

I respect your choices (apologies to Dave Schmidt for any perceived slights) but I am curious.  Surely, there is some limit to what people will take.

For example, if you asked most people whether they would (if such a thing were possible) vacation in Nazi Germany, their answer would be a resounding "no". Clearly there is a line between that extreme and the current State of Florida. I find myself wondering where that line lies.  It has been suggested that some red states may move to criminalize gay marriage.  Would that be enough?  What if they reinstitute segregation?

As we look at this foul new world we are inhabiting, things that once seemed impossible now appear possible or even likely.  I wonder how people will respond.

One difference between Florida and Nazi Germany (or, say, apartheid South Africa): A whole lot of residents fighting on your side rely on its economic health as much as the ones you want to target.

No slights perceived, and I hope your wife is on her way to a full Covid recovery.

Thank you and I get what you are saying but at some point, even if some Floridians are still resisting, wouldn't being in a place that practiced segregation or where interracial marriage was illegal cause a vacationer so much discomfort that a they wouldn't be able to enjoy themself?  I mean, where is that line?  At what point do we say that a place like Florida has crossed a line and descended into complete barbarism?

Is it when the policies actually start to effect the vacationer?  Being one half of an interracial marriage, I wouldn't be able to visit a state that had reversed Loving but I think my sense of revulsion and indignation would have stopped me a long ways before that.

Would you listen to Chopin or Wagner despite their virulent antisemitism? Would you watch King Richard or a Woody Allen movie despite the mysogeny or abusiveness of the actors or directors? Would you attend church services if there had been complicity in abuse in the leadership? Would you live in a country with an authoritarian leader? Would you choose to work towards change in any of these political or cultural environments rather than ignoring or leaving them?

I suppose each person draws the line in their own way, with their own moral compass intersecting with their ability to compartmentalize the evil underbelly of the culture they dip their toes into.

In answer to your question, I don't listen much to classical music but I can tell you with certainty that I don't watch Woody Allen movies anymore.  The sexual dynamics in his films (middle age man, much MUCH younger woman/girl) should have been problematic all along but, knowing what I know about Allen, they leave me nauseous and longing for a shower.

I asked myself this question in 2019.  The big decision had a lot more variables but I live in Canada now. I know a number of American expats who have made the same choice.

I like Ryan Adams's music. But after finding out what a creep he is, I couldn't bring myself to go to his concerts.

Yeah, I don't think I will be seeing any more Johnny Depp movies.  We own a couple on DVD so it's not like watching them would benefit him in anyway but the thought is just yucky.
