At this point, just put up an awning that says "FOOD" as every time I go past there it's something different.

Also, M-Wood isn't Brooklyn. It isn't New York. That's why people come here. Stop naming crap after it.

That presents me a problem: I should boycott the place -- this ain't "Brooklyn West." But we need a good deli.

Agree. Enough of the comparisons to NYC.

Somehow I think us old farts aren't the marketing target

If we had a good deli in Maplewood, I would spend a decent amount of money there.

We've had two pretty good delis in the Village since I've lived here: Crane's and I Can't Remember The Name. They were in the old Ani Ramen spot. Both places closed. I think a lot of us like the idea of a good deli, but money talks and bologna walks.

I think you're referring to the "Maplewood Deli and Grille."

Yes!

That was a top-notch deli. They dumped a boatload of dough into renovating the space, kitchen, etc.

Crane's was also very good. Not a traditional sort of deli, but a good spot.

Yet, Millburn Deli and Goldberg's, across the street are thriving.

As is Town Hall in SO

I liked Crane's, but I wouldn't call either of those places a traditional deli.

...Which I believe was Sean Flood's remake of his Campus Subs shop...

A Brief History of Restaurants at 181A

While Finn boasts industry success, previous owners have also come with their own culinary background. In early 2011, a children’s shoe store called Tic Tac Toe gave way to Wok Star, a family-friendly Asian fusion noodle bar opened by co-owners and French Culinary Institute graduates Aris Vayas and Melissa Kuhn. The two were previously known for Plein Sud, a restaurant in Tribeca.

By early 2012, Village Burger started serving burgers, Disco fries, fried pickles, and a slew of veggie-friendly dishes. In an example of small-business collaborative spirit, the owners even encouraged diners to bring in a milkshake from the nearby ice cream shop if they so had the urge.

Village Burger gave way to the Chicago-food inflected Belmont Eatery in November 2015. Owner Tom Bell, who previously wrote and produced tv cooking shows, had roots on Belmont Avenue in Chicago and serve up hot dogs, brats, and pot pies.

In November 2017, Maplewood locals Todd and Jessica Marval opened Sprout, a salad, wrap, and soup eatery. After a pivot from the financial industry, Todd wanted to a bring a salad-centric urban stop-in (think Chop’t Creative Salad Company and Just Salad) into Maplewood.

Deep in the throes of the Covid pandemic, Marvel decided to open Hazel’s Country Kitchen in the same space as Sprout. His goal was to take the unused dining space and add Nashville-themed comfort food as he weathered the painful complications of owning a restaurant during the pandemic. But the two businesses did not make it past the pandemic.

Meanwhile, Brooklyn-based BK Lobster was aggressively expanding their footprint. When the Maplewood franchise opened in June 2021, the company had sold almost 30 franchises throughout the country. In early 2021, BK Lobster had been profiled as a Black-owned business that thrived during the pandemic. The Maplewood franchise lasted less than a year and was succeeded by the short-lived Uni Kitchen. While unclear as to the reason why the franchise closed, the Uni Instagram presence lasted roughly six weeks.

Does co-owner Luke Finn of the forthcoming Outer Borough believe he’s cracked the code of maintaining a long-term footprint at the location? “I think that opening a business of any kind is a tremendous challenge, and I think that all of the previous businesses in this building put their heart and soul into what they were doing,” he says. “I think they were all original ideas and built with a passion. In 35 years in the food business, I still cannot say what makes or breaks a business. I have been part of businesses that I thought were great and just didn’t make it.”

Coda has been doing well so I don’t see why the deli shouldn’t. I think people just want a deli that they can pop in and get a great sandwich. I hope they have the sloppy Joe’s, I still miss Scott’s.

Doing well?  Last call is about 9:30 p.m. on the weekend.  That place is declining, in my opinion.

Past my bedtime now. When I was young, I wouldn't even think about going out before then...

The kitchen closes at 9 pm. You have to realize that this is a restaurant with a bar, not a bar, and the staff is there all day… if you want to go to a bar for drinks…. Hop on over to the gate.

The Gate opens before Coda on the weekends and stays open until 2 a.m.

I'm not saying Coda should stay open until 2 a.m. but 11 p.m. would be nice on weekends.

Me too!!!!

Someone told me very recently that the Millburn Deli has good Joes, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. I don't know how I didn't even know that deli existed, but maybe I had it confused with the Millburn Diner, which doesn't excite me at all.

Yeah, but the last time we were at the Gate (likely ever), earlier this year, the fish and chips fish was inedible, seemingly cooked in oil that should have been changed days earlier. Really a sad meal from a place we used to enjoy for a family meal with adult beverages.

Millburn Deli is fabulous.

Millburn Deli --- also, Friday Special. Tuna, egg salad and Russian dressing.

And

across the street, Goldberg's. PASTRAMI to delight discerning pallets.

Big ++++ for me on Goldbergs - pastrami, bagels, everything spice, soups, etc.  Hard for me to drive past on Millburn Ave without stopping in...(unless of course it's after 3 PM

As a deli-phile, there are a few sandwiches I travel for:

-A Philly-esque top 10 cheesesteak (tried all the nearby suggestions)

-A Vito's/Lisa's/Biancomano's Hoboken fresh mozzarella-topped sub w/roasted red peppers (iykyk)

-A Primanti Bros-esque roast pork w/broccoli rabe

-A Scott's Sloppy Joe (but love Town Hall over MilDel)

-A Boston 3-way Roast Beef Sandwich

-A good Italian sub (favorite nearby is Oscar's in Millburn "The Corfu")

-"Good" deli bread (most aren't great) can overcome a deli's other shortcomings

My kids spend hundreds of dollars annually on "The Godfaddah" sandwich from MilDel--copy that for a few bucks less, you're in the money.

I tried Lisa's a couple of times. The SLOWEST service I have ever experienced in a food store of any kind. Never went back.

I can't believe Fiore's in Hoboken didn't make the list ;-)

Thursday + Saturday — Roast Beef, Mozz + Gravy

Hah I couldn't remember their name but totally in line with the others!

Another New York themed restaurant.  Good luck.

Ferchrisakes. A beverage case with Coke products. They stuff in a few Boylan products but no Black Cherry or Grape. I'm not only out'a there, I ain't goin' in in the first place.

Why not give the food an actual try before reviewing the place?

Menu looks interesting. Of course it's not a real deli unless they advertise a sandwich by name, list all its ingredients, and then when you decide that's exactly what you want, you order it by name the first thing they ask you is "What do you want on it?"

THAT'S a deli!

I look forward to trying it out!  Looks like online ordering is up and running!

The current photo for this thread is the most unappetizing pile of food I've ever seen. It looks like an autopsy photo.

The gravy-soaked rolls made my mouth water.
