So, how much should we tax the rich? 70%? 90%?

Just saw a GOP talking head attack the 70% rates and I gotta give it to them - they have their talking points down pat. They move from one to another with the greatest of ease. Each one a distortion or lie, but said with the greatest of confidence.

It's gonna be tough row to hoe.

In the days when income taxes on the wealthiest were highest, top salaries and bonuses for CEOs were also not over-the-moon crazy because companies realized that rather than essentially throwing money at the government via a 90% tax rate it was preferable to pay higher wages and put money into R&D.

Dems should carry around visual aids to get through to Trump slappies most of whom are funding tax cuts for the wealthy.

It’s a little harder in the age of social media. Unlike pundits, regular people call these hacks out. I commented on both Grover Norquist and Steve Scalise's Twitter feeds today. They are both getting slammed for lying about AOC's proposal.

Of course he does.  But he cites absolutely zero evidence why he comes to that conclusion.  I guess he figures "I'm Alan Greenspan" is convincing enough evidence.

Would that be the same Alan Greenspan who let the economy go roaring off of a cliff?

That would be Ayn Rand acolyte Alan Greenspan.

Anyone know which school AOC went to in the Bronx?

jeebus what a stupid meme this is.

Her official biography from the day she starting running made it very clear she went to school in Yorktown.  The right wing "detectives" think they have a gotcha on her.  What a bunch of dopes.

here you go:

From an early age, Alexandria grew up with a deep understanding of income inequality. The state of Bronx public schools in the late 80s and early 90s sent her parents on a search for a solution. She ended up attending public school in Yorktown—40 minutes north of her birthplace. As a result, much of her early life was spent in transit between her tight-knit extended family in the Bronx and her daily student life. It was clear to her, even then, that the zip code a child was born in determined much of their destiny. The 40-minute drive represented a vastly different quality of available schooling, economic opportunity, and health outcomes.

I think most folks can smell the fear of GOP SWMs in dealing with a smart wiseass Latina among them.

Miller's Crucible, wherein an inquisitor posed a gotcha question at the trials: "But she have danced?"

An unearthed video purportedly showing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dancing in a college-era video was shared by conservative Twitter accounts. *Note: The original song has been replaced to avoid copyright infringement.

she's "phony" by saying she's "Alex from the Bronx" even though she was born there, moved back after college, lived and worked there for 7 years, and ran and was elected to Congress representing the Bronx.  And apparently she's also phony because when she was young she called herself "Sandy" and when she got older she changed to "Alex."  Or something.

It's truly depressing that right wingers fall for this stupid ****.

there's all these right wing guys with the "Sandy" stories they think are clever.

and then the rest of the internet is like:

oooh.  the mean streets of the Taconic. Where it meets the Saw Mill, it’s particularly terrifying.  I really feel for her.

As opposed to Trump who grew up quick and grew up mean...well, A Boy Name Sue might as well describe Trump's childhood.

The funny thing is that these comments about AOC are gaining no traction.  I quite like that she is broadening the national political discussion regardless of whether or not I completely agree with her.

One thing is that she is right to focus on is global warming.  If the nations of the world don't gain control of this problem, then it is going to control all of us and we will long for the good old days when we could listen to middle school commentary on AOC by Fox News and fellow travelers.

it's because the comments are stupid.  First of all, there is no doubt that she comes from a working class background.  She hasn't misrepresented herself in any way.  She openly talked about the opportunities she had to go to a good suburban HS and a competitive university.

And secondly, even if AOC had a real privileged background, it would in no way invalidate the things she is saying about the struggles of working people in the district she represents.

It's hard to believe anyone is dumb enough to take the right wing attacks on her seriously.  If they have a rebuttal on substance, they should bring it on.  But sarcastic remarks about "Sandy's" suburban HS are idiotic.

This kinda stuff is really grating. Have a freakin' point beyond misogyny. Seriously, whether it's this young woman or Warren (b/c she's "too much like HRC.")  Yeah, no sith Sherlock. Ya mean smart, assertive, and exceptionally competent.

Or pick one: what does she look like? Is she too ambitious? Man-hater? Castrating birch? Was Kirsten "hotter" when she was thinner?

The thing about folks who say this stuff: they don't realize how transparent they are. We know your sect. We anticipate your argument. Or something like that. Emerson. Maybe.

well that's a thought I never wanted in my head

drummerboy,

Thanks for the clarification.

Why should we stick only the high income folk with the bill, for that which benefits all of us? Shouldn't we all pay more?

Also, with regard to the IRS's treatment of capital gains, would your paradigm allow for treating genuine capital investment differently than income derived through investment in the secondary markets? (If you pursue this, I'm going to use Facebook as a poster-boy example).

I'm not going to address the carried interest loophole, because, in all candor, I really don't understand it. Anything you have handy that would enlighten me, will be greatly appreciated.

Lastly, what, in your opinion, are the "more egregious loopholes" provided to the high income folk that you'd like seen gone?

Thanks again for the clarification.

It's important to retain clarity here and note it's not "high income folk," it's the highest portion of incomes -- a "high income person" is still paying the same tax rate on the first 10,000, first 50,000, etc as everyone else. The last several million are specifically what's at issue here.

And I think keeping that clear goes a good way to addressing your question -- when you raise the marginal tax on the highest portions of incomes, the material impact on a given tax payer is slim to none --- even after paying, say, 70% tax rate on the last few million of a multi-million dollar income leaves you with several million in take home pay -- while adding a great deal of money to the treasury which can be used to, say, pay for the Gateway tunnel.

In other words, at very low cost to specific individuals, we can derive a great benefit for a large most people (including in many cases the individuals inconvenienced by the higher marginal rates).

This would not be true simply by raising taxes for all income brackets across the board.

Her dubiously imputed street-cred notwithstanding, can’t deny she’s pretty hot.

Did AOC go to a boarding school? I'm a little bit behind on the **** the Daily Caller says blog.

You should have heard all the troglodytes here in Texas accusing Beto, an Anglo who uses his childhood nickname, of trying to pass as Hispanic to get the Hispanic vote. As if that would be a wining strategy in a red state like Texas (or anywhere, for that matter). And (gasp!) he used his real name (Robert) for a few years when attending Columbia. They were so proud of their sick burn.

Of course, his opponent, Rafael Cruz, is a Hispanic using an Anglo nickname (Ted), which is the more common scenario, but that's not a problem.
