WINTER STORM WARNING Mon-Tues 2/12 - 13

Well I was wrong about a bust. My prediction was based solely on the fact that school was cancelled for the day.

We’ve got about 3 inches so far up the hill from Floods Hill.

Tuesday morning 2/13

WINTER STORM WARNING TODAY

Snow falling, now until midday. Wind gusting to 30mph. NWS has removed the possibility of thunderstorms from the forecast, your dogs are safe.

Forecast continued to shift south overnight, although the trend seemed to stop with the last model run this morning. Changeover occurred a bit early, between 4 and 4:30, and precipitation has been all snow since then. Snow will continue until storms end around noon.

Total snowfall near the high end of our 4 - 6" forecast so revising to 5 - 7"

Heavy wet snow will settle under its own weight so the measured totals may be lower reflecting that compaction. Nighttime freezes over the next few days mean clean up is necessary...can't wait for it to melt.

Peter I think I live near you and I'm not seeing heavy snow right now.  I can barely make out any precip.

Same here.  There's all this white stuff obscuring my view.

Weight of the  snow is heavy not the speed with which it is accumulating.  Like the above poster, I have to do it in stages.  Finished 1st pass on the 1st quadrant (I have 225 feet of sidewalk).  Doing first pass on the second quadrant in a few minutes.

Heavier now but still not what I'd call heavy.  I couldn't see snow falling through my window at 6:30.  Had to go outside to notice what were then very slight flurries.

So what's smart time to start shoveling?  Weather report I'm looking at says it's gonna be 40 degrees and partly sunny by early afternoon.

Coming down pretty steady by me. If my snowblower doesn’t start today it’s getting sold I don’t care how unused it is.

I got rid of my snow blower years ago. Too much of a headache with the plastic parts becoming brittle and braking off. Not to mention the hard starts even with the electric ignition. Too expensive anyway. I love shoveling the snow anyway. Just can’t go crazy with it but it’s good exercise.

I like shoveling too - for the first big snowfall.  Especially when an overnight storm is followed by a crystal clear blue sky day.  But in bad winters, shoveling becomes less pleasant with each storm.

BTW, for us oldsters and not so oldsters re heart attack risk from shoveling, I saw a recommendation to take aspirin before shoveling.

I usually just shovel but a corner lot, driveway and 2 senior neighbors walkways it gets to be overwhelming with heavy or deep snow. Which is the problem rarely enough snow for the blower so by the time I need it it’s been sitting for a year or two.  I’ll just pay someone if the sb doesn’t start today.

not here

This 75+ year old is still doing her own shoveling:  corner lot, two crosswalks, 2 driveway aprons, fire hydrant (which the fire department knows I am unable to dig out), and a semi-circular driveway which is the only access from the front door to the street.  All of this compounded by DPW's plows throwing ice onto the sidewalk at the corner.  The volunteer assigned to me by SOMA Two Towns For All Ages cannot get here until after dark (by which time everything freezes).  I was so grateful to my neighbor who stopped by a few minutes ago with his snow blower and offered to finish doing the sidewalk I have been taking in small stages since 7 am this morning.  For me, the snow was heavy with a layer of ice in places.  Thankfully, I can still move the snow as long as I take it slowly and the weather cooperates.

Looks like we’re there. The sun is peeking through the clouds and all the snow is melting off the trees

There's that post snow blue sky I love.  How many blue skies have we had all winter?  It's been quite gray.

Just over 6" at my house (just a few blocks from Max's) so I'd say "right on the money" ... as usual! Thanks Max!

(Photo is on a flat tabletop on my rear deck.)

Officially I am reporting two different measurements.

At the end of the storm, the snow pack was 6 inches, just like SAC reports.  But there was compaction from the weight of the heavy, wet snow and melting from the temps being over 32.  Measuring this morning and then adding the new snow at the end of the storm, I get 7.2 inches.

Lots of melting in the afternoon sun.
