No heat contest?

I turned the heat on yesterday, and I don't care! 60° in the house is too honkin' cold!

I have a thermostat. It turns the heat on automatically when the house gets cold.

This is true for me too

I've been enjoying this cool spell, after several days that had me wishing our air conditioners had already been put in... last night was so lovely and comfortable with no noisy fans going (except in my daughter's room -- as far as she's concerned, it's high summer).

Our place never got below 70. For some reason our house holds on to heat like a hot pocket from the microwave.

Our temperature inside continues to drop. We just went over to vote in Clinton's always overheated gym...Definitely warmer there. Vote and get warmer.

Sorry - somehow I only saw Joanne's post when I was posting (and I actually had checked ... I thought.) My bad!

Without central air, there is NO WAY that I'm turning my house heat on in June. But I do have a small space heater running in my home office today and I'm dressed in my usual wintertime "warm fuzzy at home" clothing.

I do too, of course, but I have that little switch at the bottom set on "off" rather than "heat" right now.

What is this magical technology and how can I get one? *good-natured sarcasm icon*

I completely shut off my boiler some time in April. I wanted to stop the oil deliveries! The last couple nights gave me pause though.

For the most part, this is a good thing, especially in the winter. Your house probably has a lot of thermal mass, i.e. massive things such as walls and floors that retain heat.

Because my word it's chilly for June.

Okay.

Now should we start the 2015-2016 contest? cool cheese

It's funny, we didn't have emoticons in June when I posted this!

Just turned mine on, but more to make sure it is working alright and also because my five-year old is complaining he it too cold. With the weather supposed to warm up next week, I don't think it'll be on too long. I have an unofficial 50 degree rule--temperature above 50 outside, I try to keep it off, temp below 50, it goes on.

I need to pick up a couple more portable heaters. We did okay with keeping a couple of rooms cool this summer. Maybe we can keep the house at 60 and warm up a couple of rooms for human habitation.

We're out already. It's just too cold and damp.

Space heaters not allowed for 'no heat' people...

Ditto. This summer we replaced a 35+ year-old Weil-McLain oil-to-gas conversion boiler, and this new baby's already crankin'...

-s.

Good news -- it looks like another year of cheap oil.

Kthnry yes that will be huge for us. We have a relatively new oil boiler and no plans to convert any time soon.

Happily pulled the space heaters out from the closets. We bow out of the no heat contest. Might even heat up some apple cider with a splash of bourbon. Happy rainy Friday!

I lived in NYC long enough to know that, no matter what the temperature, heat doesn't come on before October 15! smile

I grew up in an old (not energy efficient at all) house in Brooklyn. The thermostat for the entire house was in my grandmother's bedroom, which was above the furnace. She kept it sent to 68 or so during the day, 65 at night. My room was on the top floor, no storm windows and an uninsulated tin ceiling - I was conditioned to no heat from an early age! The furnace would shut down before the heat ever had a chance to get all the way up to my room.

Fire in fireplace. Flannel pants. Sweater. Cuddling. Furnace NOT on.

I respectfully suggest that the temperature is much more important than the date in making this decision. Some years we can get by just fine well past October 15th, but other years not. This year is a NOT for most of us.

Wow, I am not even in the no-heat contest and I'm outlasting some of you people smile I did have to start layering the kids though, and the micro fleece sheets are coming out of the linen closet tonight

I well remember my years in the city: there was always a cold snap October 1, 2 and/or 3rd. I would huddle under a throw blanket and wear a knit cap to bed. Then it usually got warm enough so that by October 15th the heat coming on wasn't so necessary.

Meh! If my feet and hands are warm, I'm fine. Both are at this point, which is unusual for me. My nose is a little cold though...

Took the last of the air conditioners out of the windows (no - we weren't using them, just lazy). Extra blankets tonight.

Mine are still in. My rule is, no heat til the ACs are out. Maybe Sunday, just in time for the warm up..

We're lazy. Our A/C units stay in the windows (with some insulation and sealing tape and such) all year round. However, I don't simply rely on the thermostat for the heater because I don't want it coming on just for the odd chilly night. But I checked the forecast for the next few days and decided it would be OK to slide the switch to "heat" and let it come on this time. That being said, I will be keeping tabs on the forecast and if/when warmer weather is forecast to come back, I'll throw that switch back and let the house cool off again naturally.

I also put the fleece/electric blanket on the bed. Usually that happens a few weeks before the first time the heat goes on, but I was cold at 10:00 this morning and bed didn't really seem a good solution at that point.

I just posted this same thing on my FB page, flannel PJs, but I did add that I had a cold martini too. No furnace on
