New to Soma and restaurants are $$$$$$!

Charlie busted in here like cosmo Kramer… one would think that he was a troll initially… but no one mentioned that.
He could very well be renting, cause if he bought a house he would certainly agree with MI1. Just bizarre.

This is hilarious.  And true!  But he also had definite opinions for a "newcomer."  He stated that the places I listed (Trat, Bunny's. Reservoir. The Spot. Roman Gourmet) were more take out places.  So he'd either been to all of them already and didn't know what he was talking about, or he is trolling us.

MOL always likes a little drama!

when I say new, I mean less than 2 years so I’m familiar with many of the places but I’m still struggling to find that special, reasonable place where I can down a beer or 2 and the family can eat.

It’s a pretty common vibe.

Obviously not recently but I have had more seated meals at Roman Gourmet than I can count. My daughter and I had a regular lunch date there on Saturdays before karate class.

The Shillelagh Club in West Orange is reasonable and has good live music. Yesterday they had Irish sports on the Seton Hall field and $50 for the entire family for burgers or hot dogs and all you can drink Guinness and Bud Light. Not my first choices in beers, but the price was right.

Ah. Beers and that go-to je ne sais quoi. The criteria narrow.

I was so optimistic about Village Hall. I was very disappointed in the quality of food at the prices they were charging. I'll only go back for a beer and a pretzel. Live and Learn.

Joes. Closed on Sundays.

Possible paving on parking lot?

When my children were younger we would use the Seton Hall specials for eat out night. Village Pizza used to have pies for 8 bucks on Wednesdays or Thursdays so that was our pizza night. El Greco has a burger sub with fries for 10 bux that would fill my children's black holes doubling as stomachs.

Hope so.  Haven't taken out much pizza in the Covid era but Joes was probably our main go-to in the past.  I I think there is a lot of good pizza in the towns around here and I don't get involved in the debates about which is best.  I am shocked to see Dominoes delivery cars around here.  I understand ordering that sh*t if you live in Podunk but I don't get it when there are plenty of real Italian pizza places to order from.  How much cheaper is a Dominoes pie than an authentic pizza joint pie?

Dominoes pie is at 10-15 bux less than a real pizza parlor. If you're ordering 3 pies it can be a big difference.

You get what you pay for.  I'd rather have a Costco frozen pizza.

So you can afford a home in this town, but not the restaurants?

We can afford the restaurants. But if we had to buy our home today, we couldn't afford it.

troll post.

this is absolutely true of middle class people who moved here many years ago. It appears that you may enjoy playing the jerk.

VH to me is the SoMa restaurant most leveraged to the economy. Fancy, high prices, questionable value proposition, no real customer base (mostly because it's new.) If the economy continues to be strong I imagine they'll do fine, but if there is a real recession, I would not want to be an investor in that place.

Why not?

Wild Ginger is good - just pick up a six pack on the way.  Cactus Charley also makes margaritas if you supply the tequila.

Probably shouldn't advertise this since it's illegal.

this is true. And it will have outstanding live music on July 14 grin

if you guys keep publicizing this joint Charlie might very well bust through the doors demanding that you play some George Clinton music…

I was under the impression that BYOB was legal in New Jersey.

Many (most?) new arrivals to M/SO are paying cash for $800,000+ houses. This is not your parents' suburb.

I always thought the garlic chicken at Nunzio's on Springfield was one of the great bargains in the area.

Paying cash? Do you have any data to support this claim.
My guess is that 90+% of buyers are taking a mortgage.

Kids don't really care lol. My 10yr old at the time decided to be vegetarian and didnt like cheese. Domino's was the cheapest and easiest place for the kid to get pizza. After 1 slice I'd leave the rest to them.

Careful, you'll offend the pizza elitists.

Disagrees with buyers paying cash or taking mortgages?

I wonder if the orginal poster has tried dining in Union?  There are plenty of restaurants, and many are reasonable.  The Souvlaqueria at the corner of Liberty and Morris is good.  Their menu is available on line.  We usually do "take out" but they have a dining room, too.
