We just watched it on an advanced copy. The last two episodes (one storyline) had the most implausible plot. We just couldn't buy it. And it was hard for hubby and I to admit that, because it's one of our favorite shows! We both felt as if we'd missed something. We couldn't understand why certain characters were reacting certain ways...which led us to thinking that maybe the US version had been edited down. I'm curious to hear what others think.
Finally finished this last night. It took me a while, because I just couldn't handle the tension from the first two parts and had to push through in small bursts. The long drawn-out scenes of people quietly going through the everyday humdrum of their lives...you *know* their violent murder is imminent, but it just keeps going along which makes the actual moment terrifying beyond belief.
The second story was interesting, because the killer was not targeting the innocent. Creepily enough, that somehow made it easier to watch. The subplot (investigation into Luther's professional conduct) was a good idea, but the execution was a little all over the map. Was Stark working in an official capacity? Why was his character removed from the plot without any resolution?
And I'm with you, @bee - the resolution was ridiculous with some head-scratching plot points. It also seems like each season gets crazier and more over-the-top. By the end of season five, a bullet-ridden and half-blinded Luther will be in a bare knuckle fistfight with the Devil himself while trying to steer a flaming helicopter away from Buckingham Palace. ;-)
But I still love it, though. Not sure what's happening next. Idris Elba has expressed interest in turning the prequel novel into a movie and apparently the author is now working on a spinoff series about Alice. Hmm...
Your summary of this last season is perfect, Project37. I ended this season feeling a little traumatized, a little confused and not as bonded to Luther as I had been in the past. I blame Alice. As much as I want to adore her (because who doesn't love a brilliant, funny psychopath) I really don't like her. I'm not sure I can watch a whole series about her.
I really don't like her. You're both putting me off watching this season (when we get around to it)...
We've just done a marathon round of watching the Endeavour series, prequel to Morse and Lewis. Made in 2005. We thought it well done, keeping true to both the spirits of Colin Deter's original books and also true to the TV series that had gone before. Set very firmly back in mid 1960s without making a massive cutesy thing about it, just matter-of-factly went about it's business. And didn't make a whole lot of bother about violent scenes or dialogue to hold the tension, yet the threats were there, and the acting skilled and seeming almost minimal.
I kept thinking about Luther and Crossing Lines (the Euro series we'd watched immediately prior http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossing_Lines) and how differently acted and presented they are compared with something as 'old' and gentlemanly as the Morse series. I don't watch these for the violence or the effects, I watch for the puzzle and the resolutions, and for me the Morse series is just as satisfying, the characters just as rounded and more believable.
Hey, does anyone know if there is a way to watch Luther, Season 3 online? …. maybe in that same kind of way we were able to watch Sherlock before we were supposed to….
Series 3 (a four-part miniseries) kicks off on July 2nd on the BBC.
BBC America will be running it during the week of September 3rd. More info here:
