Looking for help passing dmv test

That test is WAY too heavy on blood alcohol percentages and penalty amounts and way too light on practical driving knowledge and rules of the road.

I barely passed it when I moved here and was really annoyed at the questions. 20-some years later when my own kids were taking it, not much had changed.

What difference does it make if I know what the fine is for driving with such and such blood alcohol percentage. Who the heck knows what their blood alcohol percentage is anyway unless they have NOT had ANYTHING to drink? All you really need to know about that is not to drink and drive. But it would be helpful to test people on things like pedestrians in crosswalks, right of way rules and other such USEFUL driving rules and regulations.

I know as long as we don't drink and drive percentage shouldn't matter. If someone is 95lb and another person is 160 than the 95lb person would have a higher level of bac than the 160lb at least I think they would. I dont know that the drink ratio and rate would be the same for every one so one drink may be too much

I was hoping to its ok lol

I never said this.

I can't find this on the post anywhere. Must be a glitch Lol

When did Wayne cancel the driving test? I think my son has an August appointment there.

I called to change my test site to wayne and they said wayne no longer gives the driving test only written

So is Newark the only place left?

My kids took theirs at Rahway.

Is newark that bad I keep hearing they are hard

I think my son does too. Will check it out.

The great thing about taking the test at Rahway is that it is likely to go exactly like this:

Wayne still has the driving test, btw.

I hear Newark can be a tougher road test than other places. FYI. Perhaps others can chime in. My son took it in Wayne I think (we're going back 5 plus years).
Unless they have changed things in recent years, part of the Newark DMV road test is on Frelinghuysen Ave which can be intimidating to inexperienced drivers to say the least.

To expand, Frelinghuysen is a busy four lane road with a lot of traffic on it. I don't know the legal speed limit there, but traffic tends to go fast. If you can find any other DMV to take the road test at I would highly recommend it.

ETA: It is also in a commercial zone so it has a lot of truck traffic too.

I will have to have my driving instructor take me there to practice. I haven't been able to get a schedule anywhere else. But I was on multiple highways today. Towards the end of rush hour. There were people cutting me off I stayed the speed limit but too many people don't and some not only do dangerous things but illegal ones. Scary drivers speed demons. Frelinghuysen I believe is 35 might be 40 but no more. Im more concerned with the parallel parking and k turn. My speed adjustment is good I can stay in my lane

Plus if I switch to Rahway the driving school will charge a little more and I need my license fast since September 24th is the 3 month mark is was the absolute soonest I could take the test. Im more concerned with the driving around the cones than the crazy drivers. Lol a cone is a lot easier to hit. I just wish I could get more practice. Im limited on classes it will be another month before I can drive again. today was my first ride in about 5 weeks. At this rate I don't know if I can pass

Although I heard lodi is the easiest

It's absurd that they test you on a closed track, not an actual road.

Tom, I agree. Having the video of the Rahway track is like getting the answers to the test. All you have to do is watch a couple times and passing should be easy. The trick is surviving your first few solo drives in the real world after such an easy test.

A closed track is too easy, I agree. But Frelinghuysen is too difficult IMHO.

Are they not all closed course these days? Back when I got my license they all were (at least, I thought they all were). This was before YouTube, but everyone would drive to the DMV on Sunday, when they are closed, and practice on the course. It was way easy, too easy IMO. From what I recall the speed limit on the course was 15 MPH. Crazy!

For the written tests, are they really done now so the test closes out early once you answer enough questions correctly to pass? I took it on paper and got a perfect score (woot!) and used to get an insurance discount based on my score.

I wish insurance did that now lol. Its way too high for new drivers. Most of them are closed now. I finished so fast they thought I failed when they saw it said "no one has gotten a perfect and finished that fast" I laughed. I stopped looking in the book and just took online tests and flash cards.
I don't think you can get on the course when its closed. They have a large fence now.

Its funny I do better driving in newark and on the highway then in an empty lot. Lol if the road test was on the road I think it would be easier for me.

Rahway is too far the driving school will charge more. So I'm kinda stuck with newark. Thank you for the video though I wish someone did that in newark but I'm sure the k turn and parking are in cones so that helps.

I just called the driving school she said they no longer allow people to practice on the course only look from outside. It would be nice to get used to the course. question

When I took the test 20+ years ago it was on a regular road. But the area I took it in (can't remember the name of the town) was so quiet and out of the way that it seemed like a closed course even though it was not. The parallel parking portion was in a sectioned off part of the DMV parking lot with traffic cones, so that was closed, but the driving portion was on real, albeit quiet, streets.

If it is a closed course now then Newark should be fine. Don't worry about getting to Rahway.

I believe you do a k turn and parallel parking on the course than you turn left on Frelinghuysen and drive around the dmv block but not sure

Google tells me that maybe Newark has always been a road test on actual roads? I grew up in NJ and thought all the tests were on closed courses (I'm not from North Jersey though). That was years and years ago though, and it seems I was wrong! FWIW, they never "allowed" you to practice on the closed course on Sundays, but everyone did it anyway.

I took it 16 years ago at newark. The way it worked then was : wait on Frelinghuysen
Ave. DMV employee gets in the car. You drive about 30 ft or so and turn right behind the dmv. You make a left into this little parking lot looking area. You are then tested on reversing, parallel parking, then a k turn. You then make a right hand turn on to the driveway you came in. You drive across Frelinghuysen ave and meander through side streets making lefts and rights at the discretion of the tester (i'm sure they have a preset course in their head.) Finally you end up across the street from the dmv.

IT VERY LIKELY COULD HAVE CHANGED IN THE NEARLY 2 DECADES SINCE I TESTED THERE!!!!!

That sounds better than what my friend went through about 25 years ago. He was told to make a left while on Frelinghuysen. He was so nervous that he forgot to check if traffic was clear and almost turned right into an oncoming vehicle, the tester grabbed the wheel before it was too late. Needless to say it was an automatic fail. question

I wouldn't be surprised if he was the reason they moved most of the testing route off of Frelinghuysen. ;-)

I was told by someone who recently took the test that they had to, drive from the parking space on Frelinghuysen. Into the lot parallel park, 3 point. Then make a left on Frelinghuysen and drive 2 blocks make a a few more turns than drive back. He said he touched the yellow line on 1 turn and failed now if your turn is just a bit too wide or short you fail. If you don't stay directly in the middle you fail. If you drive around a large pot hole you fail. Jeez they look for any reason to fail you. question
