Highland Place "Nachos"

You were expecting apoxy like cheese adhered to crappy chips with a mound of canned ground beef and a few hot pepper slices.. We understand.

Now let's not be to hard on ktc ...

I do believe some of the menu are a bit different ...

I once ordered a sandwich and the waiter came back to me and said they didn't had it ... and I said "I just saw it on the menu" ... so he brought a menu back and its true it wasn't there. I told him bring back the exact menu I used and he did .. and sure was, my sandwich was in "that" menu .

So in one menu they had my sandwich and other they didn't ... go figure

I try to judge MOL restaurant reviewers by how open or closed-minded they are in other areas of MOL

Maybe I got an old version of the menu?

this could be ..

I've seen "neat nachos" on the menu, not just "nachos". In any case, HP is doing it right! What a great place to eat, drink and be merry! That said, maybe it's time to add just "nachos" to the menu!

Lets give ktc the benefit of the doubt, some menu are not the same .. I've witness it

If a waiter puts a plate in front of you and it doesn't look like what you ordered, why accept it?

ktc, you have violated the 2nd Maplewood Commandment. Thou shalt not speak ill of a Maplewood establishment, especially one of the beloved sacred cows. Your comment will be marginalized with vigor, your right to your opinion smothered. and once we find out your address, we will march to your home with torches and pitch forks. Straighten up and fly right, drink the kool aid or move!

this has happen to me ... but when you are very hungry and the food looks good (even though you didn't ordered it) and you don't wish to wait any longer ... I have no problem eating it wink

The nachos taste good, but they ARE misnamed. So is HP's "tortilla." It's really more of a frittata.

The menu says "neat nachos". HP menu's are different than Crane's menu's. Perhaps that is the confusion?

exactly. Go trash businesses in other communities. We need ours to do well.

If we're going to pig-pile it's only fair we bring Stony's "fish tacos" into the discussion.

In my first post, I actually said the food was fine. But those weren't "Nachos." Maybe they added the word "Neat" to later editions of the menu for this very reason. Still, I found the food overall to be cloying and trying-too-hard, and the "Nachos" just exemplified that.

But I'll give it another shot.

I've had those same excellent nachos well before they ever appeared at HP, in the kitchen they were created in no less, and they've remained consistently named and individually prepared since.

And the jalapeño pesto is to die for... I'd buy a vat of it if I could.

I suspect they pair rather well with an aged Havana Club, too. Ahem.

:-D

In my case, the menu I had were both HP ... and I showed it to the waiter and he was kind of puzzle ...

I don't think I "trashed" the place at all.

this thread made me hungry now ... question

everyone should go to HP to form their own opinion

I love the neat nachos too! They are super yummy!!

a tortilla in Spain is akin to a frittata..so its properly named. Its also akin to a kookoo in Persian fare...and no, I do mean an egg dish and not some complainers on this thread.

Is HP supposed to Spanish? The tapas menu indicates that it has some Spanish influence, but I couldn't tell exactly. Is guacamole Spanish? I recall some French-influenced dishes. That's all I'm saying. It's a decent place with a great bar. But for the price point, it's needs a more succinct culinary point of view, and I really don't like feeling condescended to by a restaurant's food.

guacamole is spanish ??

from Latin America yes ... from Spain no

Again--OY.

If you feel condescended to by food, I'm going to venture a guess there are issues way beyond the name and style of the friggin' nachos. Really?

And, apparently, you have issues with an "eclectic" menu.

I'd suggest you check the menu of any future restaurants you intend to visit, and make sure they've decided on a very specific genre of food to serve, and that the decor is in keeping with said genre, before you go out again.

This has to be one of the most ridiculous thread on MOL of late. Which clearly means it's going to go on and on and on for pages.

And now it looks like I need to go try these damn "nachos" because they sound yummy!

Hahaha - condescended by food. You're right ... I feel like those jerk wings are looking down their nose at me. question

I do believe in "how you say things." Having said that, I believe there is some degree of validity buried within Navigator's post (reminiscent of his/her BPS post). I'm not sure neat nachos is, in and of itself, really the lightning rod issue it would seem to be here, but there does often tend to be an attack dog defensiveness on MOL when it comes to some of the community's favorite business sons and daughters. Again, that's sometimes borne out of the manner in which criticism may be proffered, sometimes not. Just my observation.

I think it's "borne" out of lots of other people having actually read the description on the menu, and eaten and enjoyed the dish themselves. Which, I think, points out that everyone has an opinion and a different experience, and the majority here seem to disagree with ktc's assessment, based on their own experience of the food and the restaurant. God forbid.

If I'm paying NYC food prices, I expect NYC food standards, not a pretentious approximation thereof.
