No, check out the RIP thread for JML. THAT'S how MOL works...

Actually, you are both right. Just like a family ... we have our squabbles and sometimes they can be downright nasty. But ... when it really matters, we ARE a family/community as we are seeing today.

Want a tip? Swim with a buddy. Cross at the green and not inbetween. Don't eat yellow snow. The 5th horse in the 3rd race.

In general i believe in tipping generously but am I supposed to tip if I order take out and pick it up myself.....do most people tip in this case? What service am I tipping for?

In that case I tip ~10% for the order taking and packaging (I normally tip ~20% for table service).

If I get a slice of pizza to go am I supposed to leave 19 cents in the jar?

$5+ for home delivery
$2 for takeout

Tips in cash.

I am a recognized customer at the home delivery restaurants so I always get the first order delivered

Pick up is always met with a friendly hello.

Treating service people nicely makes all the difference in your day and theirs

Do people tip when they check out at the grocery store or at a gift store that wraps your package for you? What about the gas station attendant who fills your car? How about toll booth collectors if you've not opted in to EZ Pass? Train conductor? PSE&G meter reader? Township committee members?

If he was so ungrateful for whatever the tip was, I would have asked for it back and sent him on his way.

Yes, M'Lady... :O

So just make sure you don't sass me about what kind of tip I leave you! grin)

No to all ... which is why I also question tipping at the counter when getting takeout. (I don't tip at Burger King or similar on the (very rare) occasions that I go there.)

I have lunch sometimes at a place with tables but no table service, where if you use a credit card you have to click through a tip page on an iPad to get to the place where you sign with your finger. The tip page even has suggested amounts. Mostly I'm there for pickup. WWYD?

I wind up tipping for takeout because I have a long-standing business relationship with those folks -- I really only use 3 places in this area for take-out, so it's more of a personal way to say thanks rather than a "have-to" thing to do. Believe me, I get back more than I give.

Wow, I've never had anyone question my tip for them. And it has happened to you three times. Remarkable.

Same here. Never.

Quite the track record for the OP.

What about those self serve yogurt places? The only thing the staff does is weigh your yogurt and take your money, yet there is a tip jar. Do you tip there?

You weigh it yourself at the place in Maplewood. I guess the staff cuts up the strawberries.

So giving $26 tip on a bill of $105 was not enough? I thought the service was great up until then and tipped her accordingly. I had to stand there while she questioned me and asked me to point out where I had written in her tip on the CC receipt because she didn't see it. She apologized and so did the manager after we spoke with him as you could clearly see where it was written.

Tipping on top of a delivery charge is not generous enough?

What about people on a tight budget who want to treat themselves or their kids once in a while. I guess they should never order a pizza if they can only give a small tip.

If this has never happened to you, I'm happy for you. It was humiliating and I hope no one has to experience this.

Where did you write the tip that she couldn't see it?

It was clearly in the tip line, my husband and I had to stand there, point it out to her and do the math for her.

The confrontation about it is what I have a problem with.

I noticed yesterday that the cashiers at the Shop Rite in Essex Green now have tip jars at each register next to the credit card machine.

I never saw that before.

Did you forget an emoticon or is this for real???

I got so disgusted one year with the amount of tips I was giving out that I put a tip jar at my desk at work. It remained empty.....

I've never had a tip questioned and I agree it's over the top and inappropriate to question a tip... *especially* calling afterwards!
But, if you really are running out of places to eat because this keeps happening, you may want to reassess how much you're tipping.

...and this is why....

BTW I almost embedded the actual scene until I remembered the language, MOL's ears are too precious for that hootenanny.

The women in my old office used to give the IT guy a tip at Christmas.

"But doesn't he make like $95,000 a year?"

Sure, but he's so helpful.

"Isn't being helpful exactly what they pay him for?"

Were you using a discount coupon of any kind?

$26 on a $105 bill is a generous tip. It's pretty weird that the waitress didn't see the tip specified, if as you say the tip was clearly specified in the exact place on the receipt where it should be specified.
Sounds like you could be sitting at a table in her section but then have to flag her down, because she didn't see you sitting there.

I think her point, based on other comments she made was that looking at the total at the bottom she felt like she didn't get enough of a tip. When she realized that tip was very generous, she apologized.

Come on, this didn't happen. You all are falling for a troll.
