Colonoscopy Doctor

The prep is no fun, but the drug-induced nap you get during the procedure is excellent. If they could bottle that drug, I'd take it every night for a decent night's sleep.

So thought Michael Jackson.

Both my husband and I had colonocopies at Summit Medical Group with Dr. Barrison and have no complaints.  (Agree re the prep AND the lovely nap!)

Saad F. Habba on Bank St in summit. He does procedures at over look. Propofol hit my arm next thing I know a nurse is handing me cranberry juice in the recovery room.

How is the new prep so different and gooder, please.  Also, has anyone done the OTC - home test?

The prep may kind of suck, but that twilight sleep is incredibly refreshing.... (Hey, there has to be a silver lining somewhere.....) grin

The cup of coffee in the recovery room is the best cup of coffee EVER!

Wondering if we need to start giving Yelp reviews of colonoscopy and other medical procedures after care. They also give you cookies and juice after a colonoscopy...often better than the selection when giving blood....but to be fair, some local blood drives have involved pizza.....so....

Yeah....we need "Medical Yelp."

Less "drink" required.

Since my initial post in 2011, two patients of Dr. John Franzese (973) 701-8277 on Main Street (Rt.24) in Chatham have told me they feel he saved their lives. Nothing but good things about this Doctor.

I do.  He's awesome.

Avoid Lawrence Stein, who is in the same large practice as Schrader and Askin. He made a series of serious mistakes with a family member. If you need to know details, I'd be happy to divulge in a PM.

No discussion of colonoscopies is complete without Dave Barry's piece on the matter.

I remember that was so funny, wish someone would find it and post it!

what are the risks of this procedure and what are the alternatives if a drug-induced "sleep" is not your cup of tea? I am about 4 years away but dreading this because I have heard hortor stories about tears/perforations and because I am not a drug person- at all.

Well Mr LL had his first one done while awake  No drugs  Watched the whole procedure on the screen

Was this in Mogan's old office many years ago when he used to do colonoscopies in his office?  I had one done in his office and I wasn't put to sleep.

eta - I might have two done in his office, since I required a two year follow-up.

Hmm. Earlier a person reported a great deal of pain from this. What did Mr LL think? The idea of the sedation would be extremely anxiety inducing for me.

Well all the following ones were done under "twilight" sleep. I think, as a scientist , he had his curiosity satisfied the first time and felt no need to repeat the experiment

And no Cramer , the first colonoscopy  wasn't with Mogan while the all the following ones were

The vast majority of the time for most people, it goes just fine. You wake up and feel great, and there's no pain at all. As most people say, it's the prep that's horrible. It's not just the vile stuff you drink and the projectile defecation that bothered me, it was the loss of food. I had to eat stuff like jello all day.

But those cookies and coffee afterward are SUBLIME.

Been knocked out.  Woke up in recovery with it all done each time, not having remembered even being knocked out.  Easy as pie.  Even the new "shakes" aren't as bad (though still not a great experience by any means).

I understand the knocking out makes it easy but if it's the knocking out part that's terrifying, then what? I am not into being knocked out on a drug (or even mildly sedated). That's the part that makes me think I may not schedule it. Really, if rather have a little pain.

And, surely, after all this time, there has GOT to be a better way to test this?!? I say the same thing after every uncomfortable mammogram.

The NHS in the UK has determined that colonoscopies are so effective at preventing cancer that they are not merely recommended, they are required. So far, I think there is no better way. As others have said, you can have it done without being knocked out. It sounds like it's not as bad as a mammogram though it takes longer.

how else would you test it?  Not to mention, while they're in there, they can remove polyps which could turn cancerous.  It is the most effective way to guard against colon cancer.  The benefit trumps your squeamishness over being 'under'.  If it makes you so nervous, they can give you some anti-anxiety shot or pill (demorol?)  My mother died of colon cancer because she was squeamish - she never got tested.

Mammograms are not in the same category, imo.  Seems like self-exams are the most effective, altho, i still hold my breath and get the mammo anyway.

I just meant that after all this time, I would have hoped they could come up with an easier way to test it.  Sending a camera up there, being knocked out and after going through a period or extreme discomfort with the "prep"- I would have hoped there could be something a little less invasive.

I don't like medication.  I don't want to take an anti-anxiety or be knocked out.  That's more of my issue than the procedure itself that's why I was asking about being awake.  I wonder if that puts you at higher risk for things like perforations?

I understand the value of the test, I really do.  I am not questioning that.  Just 1) wishing there was a better way and 2) wondering if the being knocked out part was 100% necessary.

Dr. Barrison -- Summit Medical Group at the office in Berkeley Heights (really only a 15 minute drive)

An aside re that Berkeley Heights location.  When they first moved from Summit, I thought it would be so far away.  Turns out it is faster and easier to get to than Summit was.

I vote for Dr. Franzese from personal experience.. The best of the best !

Franzese was great although I have nothing to compare him too since I've only had one colonoscopy. I'll take everyone's word for it that the prep used to be an issue but it was nothing in my case. In fact the most negative part was worrying because of all the horror stories on line. 2 bottles of Surprep and 32oz's of water. Stuff didn't even taste that bad. Only thing I would have done different is I would have drank more water than the directions called for. Last hours of "evacuation" were like dripping battery acid.

@conand  seems like best course of action is to actually schedule an appt with a doctor and address your questions his/her way.  Good luck.
