just had a five guys burger tonight, mmmmmmmmmm....

interesting article on Pat LeFrieda in this weeks NY Magazine...

http://nymag.com/restaurants/features/65124/

A quote from that article:

"A few minutes later, the Black Label burger was placed before me. On first inspection, it looked, well, like a hamburger. Bun, meat, some caramelized onions. Yet as I prepared to take my first bite, Mark offered a bit of commentary to help me better understand what I was about to place in my mouth. “Notice how there’s no cheese or ketchup?” he said. “That’s on purpose. They don’t want anything to interfere with the flavor.”

At that, I took a bite. Like all Pat LaFrieda burgers, the Black Label left a pleasing slick of fatty goodness that kind of rolled down the back of the tongue. But there was clearly more going on here, an almost jarring richness that had little in common with my idea of what a hamburger traditionally tastes like.

A wide grin broke out across Pat’s face. “Incredible, right?” he asked. “One thing I do is, I don’t clean all the bone dust off the meat, so it retains that funkiness. You taste that?”

Indeed, the burger’s charred exterior contained the sort of flavor notes one expects from dry-aged steak, not ground beef. That intense, crusty outside then gave way to a buttery interior that seemed to dissolve as I chewed. Suddenly, the $26 price tag didn’t seem so absurd. What had first struck me as a ridiculously plutocratic experience now seemed to be a cheaper way to savor the glory of dry-aged meat—a worthwhile life pleasure."

I paused at that also!!

that and the part about the "trimmings." :vomit:

Here's a slideshow from NY Mag's "Grub Street" of NY's Most Notable Burgers:

BTW: Any duplications of other burger pics on this thread are purely deliberate:wink:...

From the Grilled Cheese Grill in Portland, OR (kinda like Katie Lee's Logan County Burger)...

that looks tasty ^^^^^^^^^^

Sonnyboy attended Northwestern U. in Evanston, IL... Good thing Edzo's (on Sherman Ave.) hadn't opened there yet, or he might never have left...

-s.

BTW: I've read that the fries are even better than the boigahs.

Closer to home: The Luger Burger, found at the vastly overpriced Brooklyn institution, Peter Luger Steak House...

MUCH farther away, at The White Lady, a stationary food-vending bus in Auckland, New Zealand:

The King Burger, topped with a Fried Egg, accompanied by an L&P. Open 24/7! Next time you're in KiwiLand, stop by...

Something a bit more exotic: Asian Burger with Stir Fry Slaw, on a Steamed Bun

Answer (A): Yes

Answer (2): Right here, sooner or later...

-s.

BTW, you realize that a 5 mile radius is pretty big, yes?

It's actually just outside that 5-mile radius, but in posting a more-than-off-the-top-of-my-head answer to Lars' query, and rather than citing the Gate, or Pal's, or Stony's, or the other usual standbys, I want my answer to be worthy of the question, so... The Krug's Tavern Burger...

But don't just take My word for it:

That bun is raw, not toasted or even warmed apparently (not the non-melting cheese slab)!
I'd have to eat the patty with a knife and fork....

Any burger that's supposed to be "The Best" would not have Kraft "pasteurized processed cheese food" American Singles on it in place of actual cheese.

Noted. However, please at least post pix of your own favorite burgers (even if only for comparison purposes) if you wish your personal quibbles to matter here...

I happen to eat 'em and have strong preferences but I don't ever have an impulse to photograph 'em!

Maybe, next week after Easter, I will make our famous grilled Thai Hamburgers (think garlic, cracked black pepper, and cilantro) topped with Mushroom soy caramelized onions and enhanced by spicy Thai ketchup (ie: half ketchup/half siracha). If I make them I will try and remember to photograph them as well!

sure do.
and you can be quite patronizing, yes?

regardless, thanks for the tips.

You're welcome, lars.

BTW, thanks for calling me 'patronizing' rather than 'offensively condescending'. I'm very sensitive, y'know:wink:...

Now I've traveled far and wide and a lot of burgers. I was recently introduced t the Five napkin burger and that is nearly orgasmic. Here is a shot I took with my blackberry. Note the pint and stack of requisite onion rings in the background.

still not as good as the Monster Burger at Bunny's, and with bacon it's even better.

Will try one of these next week if the place opens...

now I bet that's at least a $50 dollar, or rather pound, burger.

I think we're pretty lucky around here, with so many good options to assuage a burger jones...
