Break-in on Oakview Ave - Wed Night

The image of Seaweed's crossbow under his pillow comforted me.

No problem with a crossbow unless you miss or need a follow up shot.

Also have Metro from Osvaldo. When we switched from ADP we got a better (mobile, remotely controllable) system for much less per month. The thing that I get the most comfort is knowing that my son is coming into an alarmed house on the days he returns from school and I am not here. My fur-alarm (see avatar) does not work well at all

Tried living with an alarm system for a few years and gave it up when we were setting it off ourselves regularly! Admittedly, it was a number of years ago and I am aware of major improvements in security systems. We had four teenagers at home, a dog and two cats, so someone was constantly coming or going, or sneaking in after curfew!

Incidentally, back in the day, the popular theory was to arm the first floor only. One night we took the kids out to see the new movie, Close Encounters of a Third Kind. Driving home, we noticed a commotion at the end of our street - the police and fire department were at our house!

The burglars had entered the house by boldly placing a ladder in front and entering though a narrow casement window on the second floor. The police informed us that the crooks were known from the MO for targeting homes from Millburn to Morristown. They were after gold for the most part .

Police were called by a neighbor who knew we weren't home. Dog and cats were unharmed

Holy crap, that's bold to enter via your second floor! I'm now thinking about adding some glass breaks to our current system.

Full monty on the first floor and motion detectors at choke points out upper floors is the way to go in my book.

If you're going full monty on the first floor I hope you have blackout drapes. Just sayin'...

Sorry. Couldn't help it.

I almost fell off the bed last night when I was watching Channel 4 news at 11pm where Maplewood was in the news again -- this time for not only this burglary, but also 2 more (one on Mountainview Terrace and another on Van Ness Terrace). They also had a police artist's sketch. For the life of me, I can't find anything online about this (and I know I didn't dream it). All I could find was some info on the Maplewood Police Blotter: http://www.maplewoodpd.org/Blotter.php

If you go through the troble of peaking through my window you should get the whole show.

It has also been on facebook and in emails from the town.

Village Green reported on this incident, and three others the same week, quoting from blotter reports supplied by the MPD. It reported that in all four cases, the suspect gained entry through an unsecured door or window (which I assume means unlocked or already open).

They are called "second story men."

Thanks, Max and Apple -- I knew someone would find the sketch and other descriptions (once again, no e-mail for me from the town and I don't know why Village Green didn't come up on my Google search!)

Looks like they got him... https://www.tapinto.net/towns/south-orange-slash-maplewood/categories/news/articles/burglary-arrest-made-in-maplewood

Bail of $50,000 seems low in this case.

This site suggests that $50 K for the offenses in question is actually high.

"New Jersey Burglary Laws and Penalties

In general, burglary is classified as a crime in the third degree, carrying a 3 to 5 year prison sentence.

Burglary is defined as: entering or remaining on property that you have no lawful right to be on for the purpose of committing an offense. "

He's got at least two counts of burglary, looking at possible other charges and significant jail time. People have skipped town over less.

Well, he's not a newbie at this. Scroll down to a few paragraphs above the end, under "Belleville Burglary Case":

The recent news on this case is just great and I would like to thank the Maplewood police department and the detectives there. Great job in finding the suspect! Thank you!

Just curious @rowerg, will (did) you have to ID perp in lineup?

OMG....I know him. He was in my kid's class at CHS.

Most of the home invaders I have heard pose as a repairman or a stranded motorist to earn your trust so that you could lower your guard and open the door. Always make sure that you verify who the person really is and threaten to call the cops if they don’t leave. The best thing to do is to just ignore them and tell them to leave the information in the mailbox. I found a blog online from think protection that mentions some tips on how to prevent home invasion https://www.thinkprotection.com/blog/secure-home/how-to-prevent-home-invasions/ . One of the most important rule of home defense is to never discuss your home security plans with anyone outside your family. This includes sharing keys, security codes or any knowledge concerning your plans.

don't ignore if someone knocks. They may assume no one is home and come in. Knocking on the door with a "story" is how they decide whether to break in or not (if no one answers, they try to come in)

Police told us best response was/is a loud "I don't know you" or "I didn't request a --- (plumber,    handyman)" followed by "Please go away or I'll call the police" all from behind a closed and locked door.

When someone knocks/rings the bell, our dogs are on it. It's the person that continues to stand at the door after hearing loud dogs and possibly seeing them that trouble me.

hmm a necro'd years old thread resurrected by a first time poster who disappears and hasn't been active since his first post suggesting a website...
