Booker and Menendez vote against allowing people to buy Canadian pharmaceuticals.

--- claim it is because the quality of the Canadian drugs cannot be guaranteed.

yeah those Canadians can't be trusted to resell us drugs made by US.

they're idiots.

eta: not Canadians, our Senators.

What's the motivation? Are they trying to protect the NJ pharma industry?

ugh. Of course. NJ Senators. They'd lose their seats in re-election.

"In an odd coincidence, the rationale provided by Booker et al. was
strikingly similar to the objections raised by the nation’s chief
prescription drug lobby, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers
Association (commonly known as PhRMA)."

In all, 13 Democrats joined 39 Republicans to defeat the bill. Twelve Republicans supported the bill so it would have passed with Democratic support.

still the only thing that trump has promised that makes sense, is the allowing of negotiating of drug prices

Not that it is less distasteful, but it was 4 years ago. Things, and people, change. Not always for the better.

During the campaign he also promised to alter the tax treatment on carried interest. We haven't heard a peep about that since the election.

This is from a few years ago. 2013 to be precise.

Nothing in politics is too long ago. This may do in his higher office aspirations at some point.

You do know that Trump isn't president yet? The 2017 United States Presidential Inauguration will be on Friday, January 20.

Yeah, someone else pointed that out. It does make a difference. I should have checked the date.

True. However Trump's not having been sworn in has not kept him from tweeting and talking about many other things that he promised on the campaign trail.

Almost always, when there is real health reform legislation proposed, reform that actually would help consumers, its defeated by just enough votes. The defeat comes from both parties.

Reminds me when there was an attempt to lower the Medicare eligibility age to 55 with enough Democrats like Joe Lieberman killing it.

btw- interesting how this thread got deflected from Menendez and Booker's being in the bag for BigPharma to Trump.

Oh, this is from 2013. Ivanka is a registered Democrat and couldn't vote for her father in the primaries. Still, totally lame of Booker to vote the way he did.

We have to find a way to get money OUT of elections. I would make it simple: Campaigns cannot start until January 1 of the year of the election. All elections should be publicly financed, with each candidate receiving the same amount of money. Individuals can donate a maximum of $1,000 per candidate. No PACS or super-PACS. The public will have to read candidates' websites, watch their posted videos, and watch the debates to get a sense of the candidates. No television advertising.

Also: There should be a document called the Common Questionnaire. A set of questions that every candidate for office has to answer about the issues. You want to know a candidate's position on ACA? Go to the CQ. Kind of like the Common Data Set for college data. You can easily compare apples to apples.

What would anyone expect from the two upstanding men of the people. One who has associated with a sleezebag doctor and another who talks a good game but does nothing for the voters. And to think that these two would put another Goldman Sachs alumnus in the Trenton statehouse.

this is because there are no real liberals in the Democratic Party in the Senate. And that's because the GOP is crazy. It has allowed Democrats to be the party of sensible conservatives.

The Overton Window

PHARMA OWNS BOOKER. That is all.

Booker is an establishment Democrat that needs to go and not be the 2020 nominee for which he is preening. This was seen the other day when he grandstanded against Jeff Sessons, the man he praised and collaborated with last year:

Between 2010 and 2016, a handful of the Democratic senators who voted “nay” were amongst the top Senate recipients funded by pharmaceutical companies: Sen. Booker received $267,338; Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) received $254,649; Robert Casey (D-PA) received $250,730; Michael Bennet (D-CO) received $222,000. As the former mayor of Newark, Cory Booker faced corruption scandals and increased crime and unemployment levels as his star power outside the state rose. He is heavily favored by Wall Street, with securities and investment firms donating $1.88 million to Booker during the 2014 midterm elections; their second-favorite candidate was Mitch McConnell.

Isn't Bernie Sanders a Democrat now?

No he switched back to the party of sanity: Independent.
