BBC Sherlock Holmes Fans

I am not interested in the NYC Holmes at all. I will let the reality show folks watch it instead.
Part of my fascination with the BBC shows is the "exotic" locale!

"Reality show folks." Huh? I'm not sure what that means.

In other news, isn't the season finale on tonight?!?!?!?!
Hold on to your butts folks...

Did anyone else notice the writer? Steven Moffat... as in the same guy who writes SO many Doctor Who episodes. Wow.

Yes...his writing partner and the show's co-creator is Mark Gatniss, who plays Mycroft. In fact, Gatniss wrote last night's episode!

We're a little behind in season two, but enjoying it. Steven Moffat is also the creator of another of my favorite BBC shows--Coupling. He based the main characters on himself and his wife.

Hubs had to point out that I was a purist after I was upset and ranting about the total botch of the Baskervilles. I love the Baskerville story, my fave of all Holmes stories and I love the supernatural air that all of the previous stories have kept, the mystery etc. This version fell short. Don't get me wrong, the entire series including last season left me salivating and wanting more (a nice sub for my beloved Downton) but this interpretation of Baskerville was a bit of a dissapointment. Nice story I guess, if you know nothing about the original story line. I am looking forward to tonight.

Lancaster, I agree about the Baskerville plot. I had seen the original in two versions, but couldn't quite recall the details of the story, but even so I found this interpretation a disappointment. I have high hopes for tonight's episode!

Speaking of Mark Gatniss, he and Benedict Cumberbatch have worked together before in Starter for Ten ( which was quite hilarious )

EDIT: Found this on youtube. He is HILARIOUS in this as well as the talented scotsman, McAvoy

OMG, that shot of Cumberbatch made me giggle out loud. Did they dye and perm his hair for the Sherlock role? And if so, why?

After looking through a bunch of photos online, I realize he probably is naturally curly and dark-haired. I do wish he would cut it, but maybe Sherlock is not supposed to care how he looks?

Anyone remember the American remake?

Ugh. Thankfully, no, I've been spared that particular torture. The British version is SO much better.

Wanted to be first to say how amazing Martin Freeman did as Watson in that episode!!

Soo.....how did Sherly do it?

cool cheese

Really liked last night's episode! Now I'll be desperately awaiting the next season till...what, Fall? 2013?

NO. I CANNOT WAIT UNTIL THE FALL OF 2013!!!!!!!!

Last night's episode was incredible. Some great references back to the original episode where Sherlock and Moriarti fight above the waterfall, and Sherlock fakes his death. And some very good twists and turns. Best job Martin Freeman has done yet in this series, although I have liked him all along. Now I do feel I understand what he and Sherlock are doing together, although they really should avoid fleeing down dark alleyways hand in hand, oh oh.

Good thing I'll be seeing Martin Freeman in The Hobbit before too long. I am getting hooked on these two actors.

And... how DID Sherly do it????? :/

Wow - just watched the episode online...

I'm thinking Fall 2012, PeggyC. I hope. And maybe more than 3 episodes a season? Especially if Cumberbatch gets busy with films, they need to use him while they can!

On a tiny, vaguely romantic note: I like the interchange between Sherlock and the young woman lab person. And now, in a way I do not recall from the books, that we see what kind of cold almost psychopathic fish Mycroft can be, perhaps additional insight into the formation of Holmes' attitude towards close associates.

My kid who is almost as much of a "House" addict as I am (final episode tonight) really saw the parallels between the two "shows" and characters....

That's the clue for the cliffhanger, folks! If you can, watch the last few minutes again...

Sherlock resumes filming in early 2013 on BBC, so we've got a little bit of a wait.

Oh, crap. That's just too, too long. Can we take up a collection and get the BBC to start sooner?

Oh, absolutely. I was thinking the same thing, that Wilson is Watson to House's Sherlock. I haven't watched House in a long time, but I really loved it for awhile. I stopped watching around the time he started sleeping with Cuddy. That was pretty weird for me, and I felt the episodes kind of went off the rails for awhile.

As for filming more Sherlock in 2013 to show ... WHEN? ... that just SUCKS!!!!!

I DVR all these episodes, and will watch the last one again today. Too much I want to review in my head. And thank god I have all six, because they will have to tide me over for a long time. gulp

By the way, the next thing they will be showing on Masterpiece Mystery is the "Zen" series, apparently. Those were also wonderful, and the BBC have rocks in their heads for canceling it after only three episodes, but they are well worth watching. Where do they get these men? Oof! Rufus Sewell following hard on the heels of Benedict Cumberbatch. Wow.

With House going off the air, and BBC Sherlock not coming back till 2013, I'm gonna need an irascible, legit Sherlock substitute. And it ain't likely to be that Lucy Liu U.S. show.

I'm nicking Freeman and Cumberbatch's date books and burning them. Hopefully that'll speed up filming for Sherlock! :-W

Don't know if it has been mentioned, but Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller (Nyc's Sherlock) are good friends and worked together last summer at London's National Theatre in Frankenstein ( my favorite book) directed by Danny Boyle ( Trainspotting, 127 Hours). Am mentioning this especially since it was recorded and shown in theatre around the UK and US and is now being re-released. Cumberbatch and Miller alternate the roles of the Creature and Victor - quite exciting!!!

Got my tickets for both! Here's the link with participating theaters if anyone is interested

Also, there are MANY theories out there about how Sherlock did his "fall"...

Definitely something fishy going on with Watson being hit by someone on a bike ( we've all been there right? ) AND people thinking Sherlock did the old ball-under-the-armpit trick to slow down and/or stop his pulse.
Just don't know if that's really Sherlock's body or Molly has some magic potion that fix bones....she does deal with dead bodies all day...hm..

I've got a few thoughts rummaging around in my head about how he did it...

- First, why did the little girl scream hysterically when she saw Sherlock? My theory is she thought he was her kidnapper, that Moriarty or one of his minions somehow had a Sherlock mask, a la the old days of the original Mission Impossible.

- Also, when he went to Molly and said he needed her, what was that about? What could she do, and only her?

- Yes, the bicycle hit is a little suspicious, and I think it might have been to keep John from noticing something about the body. Perhaps to keep him from noticing that Sherlock had put his clothes, phone, and ID on Moriarty's body and thrown it off instead?

- It seems ridiculous to think it involved the use of wigs and masks or makeup or something... but then again, the original series with Jeremy Brett made a big deal of Sherlock's love of disguise. ETA: when Sherlock texts Moriarty to tell him to meet him on the hospital roof, he mentions that he has something he thinks Moriarty will want back. What is it? I'm thinking wig/mask?? but it still seems ridiculous.

Favorite lines from this episode:

Watson: "Fine, be intelligent, but let's give smart-ass a wide berth, shall we?"
LeStrade: "Well, that's not so strange -- I always feel like screaming when you walk into the room."

I love how they invoked the Reichenbach Falls in the form of a painting he recovered... that's where Sherlock "died" in the original episode that I think might have been called, "The Final Problem," which is a phrase Moriarty used over and over in this episode. And Moriarty also referred to Sherlock taking a fall. Such clever stuff.

I'm still fuzzy with the whole body switch of Moriarty . Remember that John watched Sherlock fall - Sherlock made sure of that. It was after he falls that John gets hit with a bike. Something happened after....

And Moriarty definitely made the girl think it was Sherlock who kidnapped her. He's trying to ruin Sherlock's image - everyone now thinks that Sherlock was a fake and set up all the crimes he has solved...Which gives me reason to believe the theory out there about something Sherlock does that is "out of character" while on the roof. If you watch closely it looks like Sherlock is holding his phone or a recording device in his hands, behind his back. This is all going on when Sherlock plays "dumb" and is asking Moriarty how he accomplished everything....Sherlock does love disguises and loves to act re- Priest beat up, friend of the dead husband...so could it have been Sherlock acting out of character by playing dumb wondering how Moriarty did everything? He would then have proof that Moriarty WAS real - and be able to clear his name with the public

I was thinking Sherlock could have swapped his coat and scarf for Moriarty's and held his body upright on the ledge, then pushed it, but there are too many things wrong with that idea. Yes, I know it doesn't work, but I can't figure out any way Sherlock could fall from that ledge and live, when his head was bleeding like that. There were plenty of people around, so he couldn't have switched places with someone once he was on the ground. And presumably they buried a body, but it wasn't Sherlock's. So many holes in the theory to fill.

We know Molly did something for him... I wonder if it had something to do with swapping bodies somewhere along the line, but she doesn't work in the coroner's office as far as I know. Or does she?

And yes, I did notice how carefully he put his hands behind his back. But he could easily have been wearing a wire that wouldn't involve his hands. I think that was a red herring (the hands) but I do think he was getting a confession while they were up there.

I might just have to wait until the next series comes out. gulp

Three episodes? That's almost as depressing as Mad Men having only three more episodes this year.

On the other hand, that Dancing Stars show finishes up soon!

I may have to start watching Downton Abbey on Netflix. I never got going with it because I had enough shows that I routinely watched (House, Glee!, New Girl, Bones, The Finder). But now that everything is done for the season...Thing is, I really liked the puzzle aspect of House along with the characters. I don't see that as easily replaced.
