If they can figure out the service issues which I really hope they can they will be a great addition to town. They were a huge mess last night but the food when it did come out over an hour later was excellent.

Seriously? By that logic Ricalton's should have been out of business before they even opened.
This is the reason for "soft openings".

We also tried them out last night. We built an assorted appetizer/tacos meal. Guacamole with the homemade chips and the queso con rajas taco top the list right now, but we haven't sampled the whole menu yet. Did not have any issue with the service. Enjoyed the food, will go again and recommend.

Thinking about going tonight.  Any updates?

...And maybe one vegan option? Please?

Went last week (Tuesday) with baby in tow. The service does need some work. We received chips and guac that we had not ordered and we were very surprised how good it was. The chips are homemade as well as the guac and totally worth ordering. We were so happy they made the mistake because the food did take a while to come out and one of the servers seemed to need some guidance as to where to take the food etc. All in all very pleased. FYI almost all items, except the banana pudding and the chorizo lobster burrito are gluten free!

Is it just me or is the tres leches there actually flan?  I never had tres leches like that.

(PS - Fortunately I caught it, but my autocorrect tried to make that 'tres leeches'.)

Totally agree, family and I would love that. Instead of schlepping all the way to Bloomfield (wont name it here) for some Zucchini, Nopalitos, and Hongos tacos.

I'm hoping they have a lot of options for people who don't eat meat (hint, hint to the owners if you are reading this).  This to me is a fatal error for many establishments in our cushy little nirvana here, the lack of dining options for people who are vegetarians or pescatarians, which is a rapidly growing segment in communities like this.  I would eat out much more for myself and my family but truth be told the options are not that good with many establishments that are beef/chicken/pork intensive.

Hubby and I went on Friday the 17th - our service was wonderful! The food was delicious! Portions were great and the fact that they offer sangria mix to pour your own wine into is a fantastic option.  Great job-  will be dining there often this summer.

I went the Saturday of the opening weekend. the guac was some of the best I've had. I had two apps for my meal - the Shrimp and watermelon ceviche was quite good, but the Tamal Colado was simply one of the best things I've eaten anywhere in quite a while. Wasn't the easiest place to order for the kiddies, but I look forward to returning on more of a date night.

Today is their first day of Sunday brunch. Caramel butter being prepared for Brioche Tres Leches French Toast. (from Tumblr)

Brunch?! Awesome! Is the menu up? Brioche tres leches French toast sounds insanely good!

just came from there, not sure why our experience seemed so much worse than the others posted here. But here goes, we left (family of three) still hungry after spending $117.00 with tip. The chicken tacos tasted watery as did the pork (like defrosted watery) and were not hot, barely warm. Each taco is around 3 inches in diameter, very, very small and costs around $5.00 each. We only liked the shrimp so ordered nine of them and we wrongly assumed each mason jar of three skewered shrimp would cost $5.00. Nope, each shrimp you added from the jar to each taco with a tiny bit of filling cost 5.00, so that was $45.00 for the shrimp. We brought our own wine, but still, I've never gone out for tacos and spent that much. Bottom line, we were all still hungry and not satisfied with the quality.

Food very good, but you don't get much for your money.

Two posts on this thread..... "We spent $ ." No indication of how many people.

Is the "hen of the woods" in the Wheat Berry Risotto, the same shelf mushroom known locally as "chicken of the woods?" If so, quite creative.

I'm amused by people who "don't eat x, y or z" and just expect alternative menu options. I also don't understand why people bring up service issues on the first weekend an establishment is open. Come on people. Are you just looking to complain?!

Must give a shout out to this place! I've now been there twice and the food is so good. Brisket taco so delicious, great ceviche and the banana pudding is to die for! Guacamole is so fresh and flavorful. They make it to order and make their own chips.

Full disclosure: Daughter works there, but I really mean every word of what I say. The food really is great. However, just as important: The owners are REALLY nice people! They treat their staff very, very well and are so nice to work for.

Please support this business and help them succeed! They seem to be off to a great start.

Went there with my kids a few weeks ago. Food was decent but I agree way overpriced for the small portions and service was very slow. I expect amazing quality if the portions will be that small and prices that high. It was Manhattan price and size but definitely not Manhattan quality. Cactus Charlie for me.

We like Cactus Charly better also (even if the prices and portions were the same, which they clearly are not.) But tastes vary so this is not a knock on Abril Cocina or those who like it. I like Village Trattoria better than Arturo's also and many disagree.

I'm glad we have lots of good choices and variety in town - the more, the better!

Went last night for the first time. We thought the food was very good (great, subtle flavor combinations) and the prices were fine. Our waitress was friendly but without any waitress skill. She made at least 5 pretty big mistakes, but we are generally easy-going. Still, if we went again and had the same service we would not rush back.

The restaurant is currently transitioning to new wait staff as many of their original servers are leaving for college. The waitress who worked last night might have been new or training.

I was a waiter and eventually shift manager when I was in college, and I find it hard to accept that sort of excuse. A good training session of only a couple of hours with a detailed menu review, tastings, followed by a mock service should allow someone to do a credible job after only one or two sessions. As long as there is a decent host/hostess or someone else watching the front, a place like AC should be able to provide at least good (maybe not great) service.

I know - I sound like a curmudgeon. It's just frustrating that we seem to be okay with paying NY prices for food with relatively poor service. IIRC, that's what doomed the first incarnation of CODA (Blue Smoke?)

@ catch 22: One report of not great service means the restaurant has bad service??? Do you really want to convey that? Have you eaten there?

Had great service the two times I have gone. I love the food. Can't really compare to Cactus Charlie's - it isn't anywhere near the same food - or the same target market

Yup we have. And we gave it 4 stars on Yelp, including compliments to our waitress. If you read my comments carefully, they were simply in response to your speculation about the service and the "excuse" that untrained staff might be the cause of SoSully's relatively poor experience. A well-trained front of the house can cover for some (not all) sins in the kitchen. That comment is not specific to Abril Cocina but to all restaurants.

Yes, no one stated that the overall service is bad. I stated that our waitress was not very good. I suspect when we go back that she will no longer be there
