I've seen a few enthusiastic online reviews such as yours, but most seem pretty mixed.
Personally, when I go out for a drink, I prefer a menu that includes classic cocktails and more inventive ones, mixing ingredients that I don't have at home. Locally I like the cocktail menu at The Cassidy and recently tried and liked Marcus BP in Newark. Also impressed that the Cassidy bar had newer brands like Dad's Hat rye from Pennsylvania. Nothing wrong with a Dewars, but I can pour one for myself at home.
I do want to see South Mountain succeed, so will try it again.
Nothing not to like about Marcus BP in Newark Love that place

Went there tonight. Got a great $8 Dewars rocks pour, great $13 burger with the best string fries around, terrific wings and deviled eggs...and the bar was half empty. If it was in Maplewood I’ve gotta believe it would be packed. And the $8 glasses of wine looked like a good pour as well.
That's an interesting observation.
Went to the new & improved SMT a month or so ago and I did in fact find it improved...steak frites were very good, GF was happy with salad + salmon, and service was fine as I recall. It's a tad on the pricey side which hasn't changed but at least they delivered a reasonably commensurate experience which the old place rarely did.
i'll certainly give it another go. it's been such a missed opportunity for the town/owners in past. same with Above.
I've had the mussels, fish tacos, health bowl (quinoa salad with nice seasoning) at the bar. I enjoy the apps and smaller plates. Haven't tried any main entrees. I like the place.
I had the burger, hubby had salmon. OK food but too pricey for what you get. I think the Gate is a better choice.
