Whole Foods - Prime - Free 2 hour delivery

Is Bezos basically trying to get us to never leave the house?  How on earth are they pulling this off?  You do need to spend $35, so it's not like I can order can of beans.

I tried this in order to avoid Thanksgiving shopping craziness. There are a few things to know:

  1. I think '2-hour delivery' means 2-hour delivery window.  I had to pick a 2 hour window that was about 6 hours after I placed my order (although there were some options to pay extra and get things sooner or in a smaller window of time).
  2. You get many brown bags (without handles) from the delivery. Each was underpacked, so I ended up with a huge amount of bags at the end that I don't have a use for.
  3. Veggie amounts are challenging. I ordered 7 sweet potatoes since each was estimated on the website at a half-pound, and I wanted about 3.5 lbs. Turned out each was over a pound, so ended up with about 10 lbs of sweet potatoes in the delivery - and was charged by the pound, not the potato.
  4. Melted frozens: It was a cold day, but all my frozen items were melted (fortunately, I was using them within 2 days).
  5. Online ordering is not the easiest. I assume they will update, but for now, it's clunky and slow.
    1. Some things have limited stock and you get a message after selecting "We're sorry, there is a limited quantity of this item available."
    2. If something is out of stock, it suggests a replacement item - but the replacement item may or may not make sense with your desired item.  (I think I got a suggestion for chopped watermelon when they were out of watermelon flavored lip balm).

I think it will be more useful to those who don't have cars, are farther from a store, or who find it helpful to have heavy groceries brought to their front door, than it was for me. By the time I was done ordering each item individually, then picking make-up selections, and then waiting during the delivery 2-hr window (which was available for 6 hours after I placed my order), and then opened all the stapled brown bags with no logical order to them, and put away the food, some of which had gotten warm, I could have gone to the store myself, bagged my groceries logically in my reusable bags, been happier with the produce I selected myself, and gotten the frozen/cold stuff home in a colder state.

I started getting billed for Prime membership. I must have accidently clicked on something when I ordered from Amazon. So there is a monthly charge whether you are using it regularly or not. Managed to get out of it.

Also keep getting hacked through my email Amazon account. Last account address was from Russian.

I realize I may have to move this post to one of the conspiracy threads but there you have it.

I have the same Amazon problem.  Apparently they sign you up for Prime when you order certain items delivered free.  I just call them up and request disenrollment which they are happy to do, and they refund the last month's charge.  I don't order enough Amazon stuff to justify Prime membership.

I intentionally got a free Prime membership in order to get a Christmas gift delivered in time for a family party. Three weeks later, it still hadn't come and I got a refund.

They need to work  a little harder if they want to keep me. grin There is very little on Prime streaming to interest me, and the "Prime First" books I've tried have been entirely awful. So if they can't get the shipping right, they don't get me as a customer.

I've seen the young people shopping into brown bags at Whole Foods for the delivery thing. I suspect they are paid very little, they seem pretty grumpy, and during the times I am shopping they are everywhere. This "service" has pushed shopping at Whole Foods from "unpleasant" to "dreadful, avoid at any cost."

I'm really glad to hear this service isn't doing well.   grrr

they don't automatically sign you up fro prime when you order, they sneak it into the check out and trick you into clicking to join.  you have to read carefully before submitting an offer.

one time when I needed a car part quickly, i did the free trial, but every other time, I can wait for delivery...and that isn't often...I find it much more convenient to pick up things locally.  I only use amazon for hard to find items.  I will be ordering a medical supply this month.  It's about $22 so I add in $3 of cat toys and get free shipping...
