Where to now? Australia

Easier to a dedicated thread for a bit, rather than a whole category cheese

It's been confirmed that former PM and all-round sleaze Tony Abbott will not do the honourable thing and leave Parliament - not only was he like Richelieu throughout Turnbull's term and instrumental in the plotting behind last week, you can bet your last dollar he was counting on bringing down Dutton and was salivating at the thought of a juicy Ministry. Pretty much no-one wants him there apart from Murdoch,  a couple of powerful radio people (one of whom admitted it yesterday), and some miners - but they're funding policy, so what can we do???

(You should feel the outrage. Yesterday at work we had two groups, Men's Club as well as the Monday group. Thirty very Senior voters, very very angry and disgusted at the shabby behaviour and blatant power playing. )

It's also been confirmed that former PM Malcolm Turnbull will leave Parliament this Friday, triggering a by-election in Wentworth. The endorsed candidate to replace him is Christine Forster, Tony Abbott's sister who is known as a progressive Liberal (remember, Liberals are conservative). She's been in politics before; Tony 'is proud of her' but hates everything she stands for, because he's ultra-conservative and she's a feminist and married to a woman.

On Friday, the current Coalition will no longer have the majority with which its able to hold government. Technically, Bill Shorten as Leader of the Opposition can visit the Governor-General, say the PM is incompetent and doesn't have the people's confidence (evidence is in current polling) and Morrison is sacked/federal election called.

Or some variation of that theme. It happened in 1975. Fraser had Whitlam sacked - read up on The Dismissal.

oh, and I forgot to say: they're still arguing over Peter Dutton's eligibility for Parliament! There's going to be a High Court challenge, which he will probably lose, so not only will there be another election - every decision he's made re asylum and immigration will be challenged/overturned!!! Every single one!

There isn't enough popcorn in the land - we're wondering if you can turn a strawberry glut into popcorn substitute... (Everyday over a tonne of sweetest small strawberries are squished and buried, because local growers can't sell them. But that's another story)

And in a very time-honoured despicable move (popularised in the John Howard era), as soon as Morrison established his reign, we have a border-security breach! Gasp! Whatever shall we do? Who could possibly save us?? Thank heavens there's a former policeman around, to act tough and who understand How To Stop The Boats And Never Discuss On-Water Matters! What a lucky break that was!!

Nicknaming the PM is very important.

Tony Abbott was the Onion Eater. Prior to that, M Rabbott (pr Rabbit)

Turnbull was often known as Turdbull (will that pass the censor?), or the Waffler.

Morrison is Morriscum or ScoMo.

Do you have chickens in Congress??

Queensland's Parliament House has a chicken coop, and the Speaker of the House is personally responsible for their care and wellbeing.

*I miss Cynicalgirl. Does anyone know how she is?

Some might argue that chickens are in the Majority.

At the Democratic Convention in 1968 the Yippies nominated a pig for President.

oh, I forgot that!

Hey Lost, Dutton's just been caught out in a third potential abuse-of-power charge in regards to visa decisions for nannies. It's getting very suss, and exceptionally embarrassing for the Government.

So Dutton’s getting murkier by the second, and it’s hard to believe that a week ago he thought he was going to be PM.

Abbott has been appointed Special Envoy for Indigenous Affairs, which our First Nations citizens are highly incensed over; and Barnaby Joyce has been appointed Special Envoy for Drought except he’s responsible for the biggest rorting of water rights in the Murray-Darling, and farmers aren’t too rapt in his oldfashioned meddling. Both positions are likely to render them ineligible for sitting in Parliament as the positions aren’t recognised under the Constitution, therefore under section 44 there’s a conflict (paid by the Crown for another role). H’m.

More polls are revealing greater scorn for both major parties, but technically no-one else can win government (holding federal government requires a majority of federal seats in a majority of States as well as a majority overall). In terms of preferred PM, ALP/Shorten is way preferred over Morrison.

And now Morrison’s past as the tough enforcer in Treasury and welfare, as well as Immigration, is coming home as people’s court cases and coroner’s inquiries are being discussed more openly. Not a pretty picture, especially when added to the banking Royal Commission. We’ll be lucky if we last until May for our election, indeed. Expect a lot more grumbling, especially if Spring and Summer are as dry and hot as predicted.

Thirty years ago, the Fitzgerald Inquiry into corruption and crime in Queensland resulted in massive changes for the State government, the police force, local media, big donors to political parties, and the electoral commission. Over the past couple of decades it appears the bad old ways have crept back.

This has also infected our federal government in ways that are only just starting to become glaringly apparent. The Adani coal mines and the Great Barrier Reef fiascos are one aspect; the rorting behind the offshoring of refugees and asylum seekers is another (massive $$$ going to unprofitable companies to run inhuman prison camps); Dutton's lying about pulling strings for political donors...

Thing is, since Abbott sleazed his was in it's been one scandal after another. And now, nearly every 'elder' if the party apart from John Howard is calling for Abbott to leave parliament, leave the party, give Morrison a chance to get something done. Yeah right.

Just catching up on today's news: Tony Abbott's sister has pulled out of the race, in Wentworth.

our new Foreign Minister, Marise Payne, is attending the Pacific Islands Forum this week, as Peter Dutton is about to face a vote of no-confidence in some of his actions as Home Affairs minister in relation to immigration matters.

So a lot of our relationship with Nauru, Manus Island and Christmas Island will be under scrutiny.
