When the hell did paint get so expensive?

I guess it's been a while since I bought, but I can't believe the prices I'm seeing...$60-70/gallon!

Low VOC requirements and other environmental concerns are the excuse.

Look at this Marine Antifouling Paint. You won't feel so bad.

Now I don't feel so bad. We purchased a gallon of exterior paint for a back yard project we're making for the kids and it came to a little less than $30. I don't know what brand it is though, I'd have to go look.

jb - that's insane.

We didn't buy that high-end stuff. We went with mid-grade Sherwin-Williams...$40. I remember when Benjamin Moore was $28.

Try Sherwin-Williams. They are having their periodic sale right now, 40% off. At least, that's the case in CT. I don't know if it's regional.

Consumer Reports recommends the Home Depot brands.

We've been using Behr from Home Depot instead of Benjamin Moore lately. Zero VOC is Premium Plus I think, about 30/gallon. It is paint and primer, so it's been easier and faster as well as less expensive and it holds up well. We've also used the Behr Marquee (exterior only so far) and it's good too. It's about 40.

Behr used to be my go-to paint. Never had a problem with it. But I started buying Sherwin-Williams last year, don't remember why. Oh, yes, I do. Because HDTV struck a deal with Sherwin-Williams whereby HDTV designers pulled together palettes of paint combinations that would work together throughout different rooms, and I found that really helpful. I particularly love the neutral palette. Soft, pretty colors that are interesting without being "too much."

So I guess the reason why I used S-W is it was easier for me to find colors I liked that worked together.

And, at the expense of putting us into a recurring loop (like the old newsreels at the cinema), there was the story a few weeks ago about the $90,000 can of paint...
