Water Lines and American Water Resources Protection Plan

Anybody have their line replaced, rather than just repaired through American Water Resources?

We have the plan, they came our and repaired 2 leaks last week and we now have a third one (original line on an old house). They're telling us they do repairs (and will now do a third repair) , not replacements but I know that this isn't true. We definitely want it replaced, and soon.

Thank you.

Check the policy. File a report with the N.J. Department of Banking and Insurance.

The policy indicates they do repairs. However, I know for certain that they do replacements under certain circumstances.

This is the line from your house to the street?

Our neighbors definitely had it dug up and replaced. But I don't know if that happens all the time.

I think the policy is that after three repair fails they finally bite the bullet and do a replacement.

Ridiculous!

If your service is already copper and not the old galvanized you probably don't need insurance at all as copper rarely ever leaks.

After looking over the terms of the indemnity program, we determined that self-insurinig was a better way to go.

Consider whether it might be suitable for you.

Call the town. We did that on the second leak and they were forced to replace it.

The water line from the meter to your house?? I always thought that was homeowner's responsibility

From the street to the meter. Search the archives, you can read my odessy with them...

My meter is in a curb box on street and house sits 100 ft back. Thats what prompted me to get it.Now I have to make a call.

My 100ft of water line is most certainly protected .If your meter is in your bsmt,it is a true statement that that coverage is only to the meter. In my case with the meter at the street, the line is covered up until it reaches the bldg. Whew.

Line is from meter at curb to house and is not covered.

I have the water line replacement insurance. But, I should probably cancel it. Almost two years ago, after detecting a leak in our gas service (luckily the leak was at the curb but the gas was migrating into our house) PSE&G replaced our gas service. When PSE&G eventually came back out to replace the section of the gas service from the street to the curb, their worker burst the pipe from the water main to our house. After many frantic calls, American Water came out and determined that our water service needed to be replaced. When I mentioned that we had the insurance, he said don't bother - this is on PSE&G. WE now have a brand new 1"+ diameter copper water service. I doubt that I will need to replace the service in my lifetime. However, $6+/- a month hasn't been worth the call to cancel the coverage.

Are you referring to my line not being covered. If so. explain please.

Is this insurance plan just for NJAWC customers? We live in South Orange and it's one of my big fears that we'll have a water or sewer line emergency in our house.

I'm referring to my line; I have no way of knowing about anybody else's line.

Can you explain why your line is not covered or at least how you arrived at that conclusion? I called NJAW and was most specific in my questions regarding my own situation.

Sure, and I believe I misunderstood your situation. My line IS covered by American Water Resources and they did a repair on 2 leaks. Before the hole was even filled in, a 3rd leak sprung. We know the line must be replaced, not repaired at this point as it is the original line and will only continue to break.

American Water Resources is offering to repair the 3rd leak but they will not replace the line ("we are a repair plan; not a replacement plan.")

We refuse to allow them to do a 3rd repair knowing there will end up being a future problem that could result in damage to our home and property. We will have to pay for the line to be replaced.

(As anaside there is no coverage at all through home owners insurance.)

Sorry for your troubles.Like any policy, they always have wiggle room which translates to troubles for us. Had it been a singular incident you would have been ahead with the policy but in your specific situation,no. On the glass is half full side, once its replaced, its done and you can cross it off your list of possible tragedies. Good luck.

Oddly enough, I've recently gotten offers in the mail for this kind of coverage from AARP.
