I was thinking the mailman walked all over your recently planted day lilies, because it happened to me.
I had that problem in Maplewood (where I converted the entire front to a perennial garden). Here I have left a path, so he/she don't have that option.
The tracking report turned out to be in error. The package did not go back to GA, but the package took 4 days to reach me (vs 2 days for the FL package that was shipped at the same time).
You're not alone. I have had much longer delivery foul-ups with the USPS. They just don't seem to be able to get it together. It's no wonder the competition is thriving.
Well, the groundhog ate some of my daylilies, so I have fenced the new flower bed. It also meant, that I had to order more day lilies (from AL this time). Shipment was handed in April 21st in Black, AL.
On 4/22 it arrived in Montgomery, AL.
On 4/26 it went 'In Transit to Next Facility, Arriving Late'
There have been no updates since then. Not sure that I will ever use USPS again.
Snail mail is not much better. I signed up for notification of when my mail is delivered because it often ends up around the corner at the entrance to what used t be a doctor's office 70 years ago. Most of the time I get mail but no confirming email. A few days ago I got an email that the day's mail had been delivered but no mail to be found. I finally received that mail the following day.
The tracking they offer has changed drastically. It no longer shows me town by town, just that it has moved along, supposedly, and this “it’s gonna be late” notification is ridiculous.
The package arrived May 14th, in a plastic bag as the carton was somewhat crushed.
Not sure who is right on that detail, but I am fed up with USPS.
On Sunday 5/11 I placed two envelopes into the mailbox outside the Maplewood Post Office. The sticker on the box said pickup would be 5:00pm Monday. These envelopes contained checks destined for family members in FL and TX.
One of them was intercepted, had the payee erased and replaced, then deposited via mobile deposit on Wednesday 5/14. The second check has not yet arrived at its' destination.
This HAS to be the work of USPS employee(s). F USPS. Never again.
So sorry this happened to you!!! Very upsetting.
When our p.o. (not in NJ) had trouble like this, they suggested bringing checks inside. Not easy for working stiffs, i know. Another nearby p.o. here has added a very narrow snorkel slot to their outdoor box, so i suppose they had the same kind of theft.
Please do report this to your post office, if you haven't already.
(sort of counterintuitive, but i've heard that gel inks are resistant to this kind of tampering)
eta: In our local case, the theft was not the work of USPS employees. Someone was managing to fish envelopes out of the drop box.
It's more than just checks or cash that are at risk when you use a USPS mailbox. Our opthalmologist's billing service sends a final bill after insurance payments. You can pay by mail with a check or now with a credit card by filling out the conviently provided credit card form on the bill. Having run out of checks, we opted to using our credit card and mailing it from the outdoor box (with that narrow slot) at the post office. Guess what. That payment was never received at the doc office and now we've increased our monitoring of that card and today I'm driving to the doc office to pay the second bill in person.

Not necessarily. There are reports of mail being removed from mail boxes by persons other than postal employees. There have also be a few instances reported where local postal employees were robbed of the mail they were carrying. This is why it has become advisable to deposit outgoing mail inside the post office rather than in the mailbox outside.

I recommend canceling the card immediately.

The box outside the PO on Maplewood Avenue has one of those narrow/restricted slots. I figured I was safe with that and it being a relatively high-traffic area.

Still safer to wait until the post office is open and deposit your mail there.
