Travel insurance

I've never purchased travel insurance but after LL's injury and forced cancellation of her trip I have become very nervous.  I'm planning on traveling in late April and wanted to know if anyone could recommend a travel insurance company. Thanks.

where are you going? Type of vacation (cruise, AI, package)? Did you buy land and air? How old are you? What kind of insurance (need for medical coverage abroad or just protecting cost of trip)? Your TA should have added before final payment. If you've made final payment, it's probably too late to add at all.

I have a flight booked to England and didn't really think about any cancellation at all.  I guess I should have but have never had any problems.  After reading about all LL's problems I thought I would look into the concept.  I have no reason to think anything will happen but one never knows.  It's just to protect the cost of the trip if anything happens prior to departure date such as an illness or traumatic fall.

If all you have is a flight to England, no real need for insurance. For future reference though, you can usually buy it cheaply right ghrough the air carrier when you buy your ticket. worst case, you'll have a $200 change fee if you can't travel as planned. Insurance is generally for packages like a cruise or non-refundable resort with air.

I'm currently considering this Blue Cross travel site for a trip we are contemplating:

Cristabel, this was the very first time I took trip insurance for a cruise  I was more concerned about my plane being delayed with bad weather and missing the boat    I didn't even think of the medicL aspect    I did get the insurance through my cruise agent after my finaL Payment

We've needed to cancel two trips and I was really glad we had the travel insurance. I am planning to purchase insurance for a trip in June, and will check out all the recommendations on this thread. Thanks for posting.

As with most insurance policies, read the terms carefully and figure out what your situation is re: what they are offering.  I have health insurance through work that has global coverage as if I am going out of network.  (It was hard to find this out, btw, and took several emails back and forth with HR and Anthem).

Some policies offered trip disruption for illness or death in family, but amazingly, didn't cover pre-existing illnesses.  My 89 year old mother had had just about everything wrong with her at one point of another and it looked like any illness she had would void this feature.

Looking at the cost of what I had to prepay versus what I would forfeit and the terms of the policy have led me to buy and sometimes pass on the policy.  Depends on the terms and how that graft onto my situation.

I've purchased medical travel insurance that covers pre existing conditions (which I have several)  for trips to Singapore. It's under $75 for a two week trip  with a $1 million  limit . I used hthinsurance.com

typically, your cheapest source for insurance is at point of sale through vendor you are buying the travel from but you have to decide if it meets your needs. I'd always insure a cruise because they have very strick policies for refunds and adhere to them unwaveringly. If it's air only, I wouldn't bother insuring- I'll just take my chances and eat the small penalty of $200. Many hotels let you cancel same day, 24 hrs, 48 hrs- I wouldn't bother insuring that either.

www.tripinsurancestore.com or AAA, and check what kind of coverage your credit card carries.
