tpms replacement ???

I have a 2007 car so "should be" a 1st gen tpms system.  The sensors in the wheels need to be replaced.  I recall hearing/reading things about tpms that I really didn't pay close attention to, so I may have misconceptions.

I've had one replaced; cost-  parts $80,  installation 25,  syncing 25.  This seems high.  Does anyone have different experience?  I'd like to see about getting this done differently.  Several websites list parts for my car $40-80; syncing should be included with installation.

How can I determine the correct one(s) that can be used w/ my car?

Can units from diff mfrs be used together?

TIA for your time and insights

from what I understand the batteries last about 10 years. That pricing is about what I was told ($140).  Each tire needs to be dismounted and balanced, the unit is inside the wheel. The syncing varies by car, on some requires use of OBD computer.  I would guess there are after market in addition to OEM sensors

Do you feel strongly about having the Sensors? On some cars it can be switched off, though it’s not something a dealer would do

On my older car the TPM failed twice. First time I replaced. Second time I left it. To me its not worth the trouble or expense. Checking tire pressure is ridiculously easy, done once a month. A severe failure, such as a flat, is immediately obvious.

Hi,

Thanks for your input.

I was told that I’ll fail inspection bc of the malfunctioning tpms (it’s a mandated system).  Also, the reason why I need this done is that the valve stems corroded and broke off in my hand when doing tire pressure.

If you’re right that I don’t need a functioning system and it can be turned off I’d love to do that.  A regular valve stem replacement is about $20–25.  Here’s a weird question:  how can we check if it IS a point that will cause inspection failure?

Hard to say. The TPMS light in my car went on years ago and it's never failed inspection. But my most recent inspection was done by a private mechanic. It's been a while since I had it inspected at a state facility.

TPMS is not mandated in NJ. I passed inspection with the TPMS light on.

Follow-up:

I just called a reinspecttion station and was told that I won’t fail for tpms.  We would fail if the check engine light is on.  Of course this is only one facility that I checked.  Given my luckI better get 18 more cconfirmations...then pray.

Add’l info- spoke to a couple of other re-inspection stations...will NOT fail for tpms.

final follow-up:  Just passed inspection- not even a mention of TPMS light.

So much for maplewood tire’s assertion that I have to get the work done or I’ll fail inspection!!!!  Since they would do the job, at about $140 per tire, do you think that may have influenced their “advice”???

 I definitely wouldn't go back,.

Avoid Maplewood Tire. I use Firestone on Springfield Ave opposite whole foods.

I avoided that place(MT) for a while.  It changed hands several times so I decided to give the hometown shop another try.  NOT AGAIN!!

I was using Auto Tech (might be Firestone).  They were OK.
