Townwide Garage Sale

I just read that South Orange is having their 8th Annual Townwide Garage Sale.  Sounds like a great idea/event.  Has anything like this ever been done in Maplewood?  Apologies if this question has been asked before.

Good question. Our block is having a block-wide garage sale on Saturday, April 14. Please stop by Menzel Ave in the AM. The weather is supposed to be beautiful and I'm sure there will be some good stuff for sale!

I think a Maplewood Townwide Garage Sale sounds like a great idea.

i think it sounds unmanageably tooooooo big.  Where to go?  Too much traffic.  Coordinating a townwide sale on a section by section basis, designated dates, makes more sense.  Or a flea market in Mem park w/ ‘permit’ booths.

Cool. Did each house have to get an individual permit or did town give a group discount? Was it hard to coordinate?

Our street is small, about 60 houses between Boyden and Schafer, and we have a pretty active email group on our block and a block captain who organized the event. Each house needs an individual permit, but our block captain is collecting them and turning them all in, with a few people doing it on their own. They didn't give a discount as far as I know, I believe it is $10 a permit.

--- each house needed a permit.

As I recall, the purpose of permits is to prevent sales that take place week, after week. Since an area sale or a town wide sale would be a once a year event, what is the purpose of the permit? Change the regulations to allow a once a year event that requires no permits.

Besides income for the treasury, what benefit do the people get from requiring a permit? What benefit does the homeowner get from requiring a permit? So some schulb wants to sell stuff on his driveway on Saturdays, what's the problem?
