To the driver who honked at me on Ridgewood this morning

Dear fellow driver in Maplewood,

#1  I realize that it is an outlandish idea, but it is actually legal to drive at 25 MPH in a 25 MPH zone.

#2  I am sorry that I could not turn onto Baker as quickly as you would have liked, but it seems that pedestrians have the outrageous idea that they have the right of way in a cross walk.

#3  I feel for you, that you could not complete your pass across double yellow lines due to the oncoming traffic.  If you had been allowed to purchase that bazooka, you could have blown them (or me) away.  Maybe you should take that up with your congress man/woman?

Thank you for the chuckle.

TomR

The same thing happens to me at least once a week on Ridgewood Road.  I don’t know which direction you were driving, but I have noticed that on the northbound side coming from Millburn, that there are no speed limit signs. There are plenty of signs posted on the southbound side.

One of the key lessons I tried to impart to my kids when I took them practice driving was to never let someone honking behind them bully them into taking an unsafe action. (This is especially true in the context of making left turns across a lane of oncoming traffic.)

Not to mention those always optional rights on red.

Right on red is after a FULL stop. If you even try to slow down before making that right you’re likely to get honked at by some impatient jerk who can’t wait the 1-2 seconds it takes for you to stop, then turn

Whenever I’m tailgated on Ridgewood nothing is more fun than locking cruise control in at exactly 25. Agree with the observation that the tailgating issue is worse northbound.

I sometimes drive out of my way to the end of Ridgewood or Wyoming, just to piss off the tailgater.

My therapist says I have control issues...

Yes, I was northbound.

Agree about lack of speed limit signs.  However, it is a residential area, so 25 MPH should be obvious.

Thread drift:  Both Valley, and Milburn Avenue, have been reduced to 25 MPH.  Neither is being observed (on Milburn Ave they tailgate you at 40+ MPH).

The speed limit on the South Orange end of Ridgewood is now 15 as a result of the series of serious accidents at the Lennox/Ridgewood intersection.  I bet the Village could give us a reduction in taxes if they just stationed a cop at the corner of Thornden Street and let them write tickets day and night for the drivers who blast through there at 40, 50 or even 60mph.

That's what I always say about posting the police at each corner in town on a Friday night!!

Why does every discussion of speeding lead to "if they just wrote more tickets, our taxes would go down"? Your taxes are not high because cops aren't writing enough tickets, and your taxes are not going to go down.

We are joking. We are suggesting that the revenue from the traffic tickets would be so high it would pay for the staff our taxes pay for.

Yes joking.  The idea is that the number of speeders is so astronomically high that a fee on them would pay for any possible budget.  It is, in reality, hyperbole.  There are not enough speeders to pay for the Villages budget, just enough to kill a first grader if someone gets distracted for a second while school is letting out.

Seriously, I saw a guy passing another car in that section AS I WAS WALKING MY KID HOME FROM SCHOOL the other day.  I won't say what I wanted to do to the driver but I will say that I was VERY angry.

My favorite move when someone is tailgating or beeping or something like that - pull over and let them pass. It's not worth it.

Sometimes they pull up along side put down their window and tell me to go **** myself, which seems odd. But whatever.

I have to admit, that I consider 25 MPH to mean 25-30, but I do consider 30 a hard limit.  Whenever someone tailgates me at 28-30 mph, then I make it a point to slow down to 25 mph.

The guy tailgating you isn't doing 50 through a dangerous area with children.  Best to keep it like that.

Until he gets so frustrated he passes on the left, endangering not only pedestrians but other drivers as well.  At least in full view chugging along at 40 he’s not a hidden ticking time bomb waiting to going off with an increased level of frustration.

I consider 25 MPH to mean 20-25.  If the psycho behind me doesn’t like it, they can find a new way to go.

Long ago, a MOL poster observed that many southbound drivers took the curve under the railroad trestle on Ridgewood near Glen Ave. with all four wheels on the wrong side of the yellow lines. I live nearby, and you would not believe the number of cars that I have heard being totaled as a direct result, at the intersection of Ridgewood and Cypress. Slow down.

I emailed the SOPD the other day to ask for more enforcement in the Ridgewood 15mph zone, especially during the times kids are walking to and from school. Chief Kroll said he would talk to his traffic enforcement officer.

I’d just like to express my satisfaction at reading insights on this topic from a poster named GoSlugs.

Both Valley & Milburn Ave have been reduced to 25 MPH, but I see zero enforcement (and thus most of the vehicles on those roads travelling at 35-45 MPH, or more).

I am not now and never have been a member of law enforcement.
