This is so dangerous, what is this dad thinking???

And definitely make sure the helmet is sitting properly on their head. We have passed way too many kids where the helmet is sitting way back on their head exposing the front.

A helmet saved me from a serious injury not long ago. i lost control of my bike turning a corner on Wyoming and went head first into a telephone pole.  Even with the helmet on, I was dazed.   Without it, I'm thinking skull fracture.

I recommend going to your local bike shop for bike helmets. The people there can make sure it fits and is on your head right. A lot of people wear their helmets wrong, losing much of the protection they can give.

If you live in or near Maplewood, High Gear Cyclery is an excellent bike shop near you.

Emmie, riding on handlebars IS stupid.  Riding on a seat that is attached to the frame of a bike is not (look at the picture).  It is actually safer and more stable than having the child on a seat attached above the back wheel of a bike.  If you see him next time, look closely before assuming the child is on the handlebars.

Also, the law is that kids do need to wear a helmet, adults are not required.  It actually should be made mandatory that adults do - it is safer.  Also, bike lanes should be made mandatory, but we unfortunately live in a car-first culture, even in a very progressive city like Maplewood.

Local police will impound any bikes attached to any lamp post or sign post in town, but they provide very few places for people to lock their bikes.  Even Jefferson school took down its bike rack last year because they needed more parking spaces!

Tom is right - give bicycles the right of way.  Even if a biker is stupid and gets in your way, if you hit him with your car, it's your fault (just like a pedestrian).  Good bike laws and protections promote good biker behavior.

The other day I was walking and I saw this guy minding his own business.  I was like, "What the hell?!?!?"  That may have flown 30 years ago or maybe in Europe, but you'd better start judging the behavior of others that has literally no affect on you Pronto!!!!!!

I don't agree with mandatory helmet laws for adults, and I don't agree with laws requiring use of bike lanes.

@terp, I am a registered nurse, and spent many hours working the E.R. also cared for many children with traumatic head/brain injuries from just this kind of thing. Some didn't pull through. And yes, I will judge when I see people jeopardize the safety of children!

My bad. You're right.  The only worthwhile body is a busybody.

Here's the thing.   Who takes care of this person if he/she is rendered disabled and doesn't have sufficient personal resources?  That is why society has an interest.  We try to not let people die in the streets or rot in their own feces under a bridge.

How did we get from a dad giving his kid a ride on his handle bars to rotting under a bridge in our own feces?

Because both are connected through the sentence in that post which asked:

"Who takes care of this person if he/she is rendered disabled and doesn't have sufficient personal resources?"

Mandatory helmet laws for adults can often be used as probable cause by police to stop "suspicious" people on bikes. That could be a way to stop bike theft, or it could be a way to profile people.

Family and charity.  You realize that life has risks.  I mean we can sit in our beds all day to avoid risk, but there's even risk in that.

I can see where someone who owned a helmet company would get all bent out of shape because of this father's behavior.   Literally everyone else who complains is being an obnoxious busybody.

I guess you don't like seatbelt laws either?

About three or four mornings a week, I see this guy riding a bicycle on Ridgewood Rd. with his kid on the front handlebars, kid looks to be around 8-9 years old, guess he is taking the kid to school. This is a very busy street, especially around 8 A.M. when he is doing this. Neither are wearing helmets, can't believe how stupid some people are! Rant over.

was he sitting on the bell?

Did it?

Saw several kids walking down Valley St.  One kid purposely stepped on a crack...HIS MOTHER'S BACK IS NOW BROKEN!!!

Ha.  Let's hope that kid likes rotting under a bridge in his own feces.

Just wondering if @Hoopshoedavegl_Boy and/or @terp think that they're funny (or if anyone else thinks that they are).

Some child got a hold of the keyboard.  S/he should be in school.

I will wear a helmet when I type...that will be safer.

I find S/he offensive...I identify as a lawn chair.

I am not being funny.  But I admit that I find some @Hoopshoedavegl_Boy 's posts pretty hilarious

Let's remove all laws that protect all people, especially children.  Then whe can live in a lawless utopia, because, you know, big government is bad and overbearing.  Who needs airbags, seat belts or speed limits?  I like the good old days when we had 1/3 the automobiles and 3x as many fatalities.
