OUT, OUT ?
Certainly, nothing in the name would inspire me to patronize.
Where is this Spot? Hard to comment when I don’t know what I’m talking about (although I guess I’ve been known to comment on things I don’t know anything about).
Newly-renovated with new owners, former Maple Leaf diner now called The Spot: https://www.thespotdiner.com/index.html Let's patronize their business and wish them well, regardless of feelings about the name please.
Wow! A major change. The Maple Leaf was an institution for decades. It used to be much smaller and in the space at the corner of Inwood and Maplewood Ave.
I stopped in to grab a sandwich and coffee on my way out this morning. The inside is totally refreshed.
Behold!
Delicious. Good roll.
I like the coffee, but that is such a personal thing. I’m not going to say that the coffee is great. I’m very happy with it.
I wish them well. The new interior is like the diner equivalent of the dark blue/gray house siding that isnow going up all over town.
Are the new owners, the Latinex people who took over about two months ago? I like/liked them.
Wow, back when my kids were young, and we lived in Maplewood, we went to the Mapleleaf almost every weekend. The people that owned it were lovely and kind to the kids, always.
Some of the grumpy waitstaff won't be missed though. Once I asked for toast, eggs and bacon - no potatoes. She brought me a plate piled high with home fries. I said, "I asked for no potatoes." Her annoyed reply? "Just don't eat them."

Yes those folks have taken over for at least 2 months ago even longer I think. I took a look at their new menu and as mentioned above glad to see the usual items are there with additional items added. My go to meals I've had there depending on mood has been the Cobb Salad or the Power House wrap (for a breakfast type of meal). I am wondering if they offer frittatas (my go to breakfast at the Parkwood - their Mediterranean one is delish) as I didn't see it. Here's the website/menu: https://www.thespotdiner.com/

Disappointed that they changed the name because of its longstanding roots in the Village, but the new interior is well done. Menu & prices pretty similar to Maple Leaf. Good luck to Alex, the new owner, and his family.
I switched it up to a bacon and egg on a roll this morning. Quite delicious.
Had to try The Spot.... and we've been back for a 2nd breakfast over the weekend.
Service & food were fine! Bacon & Eggs, and a Skillet (Bacon, Eggs, Potatoes & Cheese all together).
We liked the coffee. Good luck to the new owner!
We had dinner there tonight. Really good! Highly recommend!
Interesting menu- not outlandish, but definitely a cut above burger and fries. Portions were ample and prices are very reasonable. Family owned and wait staff- learning their way. Several nice sized orders were picked up for home; sounded like happy repeat customers. New, attractive decor. a good SPOT
We will definitely be going back again!!!

What did you get?
I'm thinking about having a MOL goes to lunch outing to try it out.
Hi,
I had the combo shrimp and chicken scampi; wife ordered veal and shrimp combo. Both reasonably price generous portions. Chicken soup was also good…we didn’t have dessert.
I just ate there today and had the French Toast Deluxe
with scrambled eggs & bacon. It was good!
We just ate there after church. My Reuben was good. Mrs Incredible had a BLT which she reported being delicious and our daughter had a Belgian waffle and bacon. Also yummy.
Ate there yesterday. I was annoyed to see they tack on a 3% charge for credit cards. This in addition to displaying a tip jar at the register. Will not go back soon to show them how annoyed I am.

Unfortunately, the surcharge for credit cards is becoming more common. Pickett's also includes this.

I wonder, too, how a driver of a gasoline-powered car would act on his irritation at a now ubiquitous practice at the pumps.

Funny thing is that it seems to be becoming less common at the pump recently.

I'm going to assume that this is a serious post to I'll reply that way. Restaurants get assesses a few for credit cards. They could simply cover that with increased prices across the board or just assess it to cc users. And why wouldn't they have a tip jar?
But maybe I'm Just missing your joke in which case, never mind.
Who would the tips go to? The floor sweeper? I already tipped at the table. And the credit surcharge tipped the owner. This tipping culture is getting to be unrestrained, unquestioned and over the top. No joke.
Can't wait for the holiday season when someone here suggests how much to tip a doorman.

Tip jars by the cashier are usually to tip when picking up a takeout order. A lot of times it’s the waitstaff that takes the time to pack up a takeout bag, add napkins, condiments etc. It’s not the same level of effort as serving a table, but I usually drop like a dollar in there if I’m picking something up.
I don’t use the tip jar if I eat in the restaurant.
It does go to show how pervasive the tip-based economy is in the US.
