The Maplewood Diner has reopened

I am pretty sure it will be the only 24-hour dining establishment in the 2 towns.

Something to do when "Law and Order"is not on TV at 3 in the morning

The nearby Huck Finn diner in Union is also 24 hours and they serve alcohol.

The Huck Finn is not 24  hours.  They have certain late nights but that's it.

I got sick at the Huck Finn 16 years ago and have never gone again.

The White Castle on South Orange Ave. (technically in East Orange although you'd be forgiven if you thought it was Newark) is 24 hours.

And they have fried cheese curds.

At least you had a better experience than this guy:

I thought it was 24.  Good thing I did not try to go in the middle of the night.  I did know about the body found there.  I remember that.

Yes, new owners.  More info here:  http://villagegreennj.com/food-wellness/new-improved-maplewood-diner-reopens-june-17/

Mark Twain is, I believe.

Love Mark Twain Diner.

has anyone been to the new place?

My wife and I ate there today  the staff seemed very nice.  but on the whole I would have to say I am not at all impressed  and we'll have to think twice before I return  my wife got  the  eggs benedict with spinach  I said they were fine  not great just fine  her potatoes had almost no flavor no onion no pepper no salt or pepper  nothing I tasted them they were completely bland. I had what they said was chicken orzo soup in fact it was chicken soup with orzo noodles as a chicken broth it was fine but not a scrap of chicken in it and true Greek chicken orzo soup usually has spinach in it slightly creamy texture and the lemony flavor this was okay but in truth nothing to write home about I found the prices on the menu to be from the reasonable to you have got to be kidding nearly $15 for a gyro and fries seems to be really high I hope they improve I hope they put something interesting on their menu because right now there's nothing that would bring me back if you go I hope your experience is better than mine and I look forward to reading other people's reviews

I think this is what is called a soft opening, maybe not, but they will probably get better after a few weeks and their routine sets in.

We had breakfast there this morning and thought it was excellent -- less greasy and fresher than your usual diner. I loved the Tex-Mex omelet and the hubster liked his Irish Eggs Benedict (you guessed it -- corned beef hash). The wait staff was incredibly friendly and eager to please. A couple of glitches in the service -- brought hash browns when I asked for fruit, but immediately brought a big bowl of fruit to compensate; little stuff -- nothing some experience won't fix. The place itself is really nice looking, a lovely renovation. We will return.

I thought that was standard for NJ diner breakfast potatoes.

You must mean North Western Greek Orzo soup as served maybe  in Albania.

Drank the stuff my entire life and I have never seen a scrap of spinach go floating by,  not that I would have eaten it anyway

It is.  Maybe you'll get a fleck or two of green pepper and/or onion, but it's surely not a requirement.

I'll defer to author on matters of Greek soup.  Further, in my diner experience, chicken orzo, chicken rice and chicken noodle are only differentiated by the last word--same soil with a different add-in.  Lemon chicken orzo is a completely different soup (and often does have spinach).

Yes, I get them confused.  They are on the same street and both owned, or were both owned and named by a Mark Twain fan.

I always wondered about that odd connection... I always imagined the similar names were from two estranged brothers, one poking the other.

I refer to Greek diner soup as "Cream of Salt."

Really enjoyed breakfast there this morning.

Hubby and I just finished sharing a slice of yummy triple layer German chocolate cake.

Went tonight.  Food was fresh but only so-so in taste.  Service was slow and they didn't check to refill water glasses which annoyed me.  With no one in there and being new, I kind of expected the people in there to try and shmooze the customers a bit more.

So they've carried on the traditions of the old place.

We had brunch there this morning. They were understaffed and the servers were frazzled, but otherwise it was fine. Nothing to write home about, but no complaints, either. In fact I give them big points for making my wife's soft-scrambled eggs actually soft-scrambled. That almost never happens. We'll definitely try them again when they've had some time to get the kinks ironed out.

Had a Fathers' Day brunch that couldn't be beat.  Good value, too.

We will be back.

I enjoyed my corned beef hash and eggs over-easy (cooked properly) and Mrs. Lanky did not particularly enjoy her omelet / scramble.  The taste was very typically diner-y (I've always wondered why 90% of diners serve hash potatoes with corned beef hash), the menu was rather small compared to most diners.  I would term it unremarkable, both for good and bad.

The White Castle is being remodeled.
