Pope Francis, Catholics, and Christians in the news worldwide

Francis criticizes traditionalist Catholics who 'safeguard the ashes' of the past

With all the trauma of change is every facet of life these days, I get a tad more traditionalist in my thinking. I am conflicted in that I embraced technology— and my microwave is an integral part of my life. smile

Being “Woken” every day is exhausting!

You want to eliminate abortion?  Provide men and women with cheap, accessible, reliable birth control.

You've been pretty consistent in opposing ways of preventing unwanted pregnancies which is how I've always know that you have been lying about opposing abortion.  You aren't anti abortion, you are just anti woman.

Good morning! I've just been reading this report on the Pope's new translation/preferred wording for the Lord's Prayer:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/jun/06/led-not-into-temptation-pope-approves-change-to-lords-prayer

'Fall', not 'lead'.

Opens up a world of discussions on agency/responsibility, accurate translations, the veracity of the Divine Word legacy etc.  What I'm most interested in this morning, if I may ask, is: are any church-going Catholics on MOL going to change their recitation of the Prayer in line with the Pope's edict?

I am still trying to pronounce the  “transubstantiation” change of a few years back!

will your parish/diocese be bringing in the new Lord's Prayer?

beautiful — thanks for sharing!

Sorry, mtierney, this wasn’t a snide or mocking question. I really am wondering. I spoke with a friend here, who commented that apparently some time back there had been a change that inserted a phrase used by the C of E, which she thought was a disgraceful betrayal of Catholic tradition for this prayer.

The revised translation was by the bishops in Italy for Masses in Italian.  "News reports in English may have given the impression that Pope Francis had changed the Our Father for the whole of the Church, rather than his see having confirmed a change made by the bishops of Italy."

Joanne, didn’t take your question as “snide” at all — just had not heard of a change. Thanks, Nohero, for the clarification.

That’s outrageous.   Hope every Catholic in the Northeast raises hell and / or stops donating.

Just curious, but could you define "real church"?

Yeah, I was wondering about that one too.  There is a difference between opposing the very wrong things that the Catholic Church is doing today (as I obviously do) and simply being anti Catholic which is a form of bigotry.  Not saying Basil is a bigot but I would like to see this comment elaborated on.

Perhaps he means the Orthodox tradition? (Greek, Russian etc) cheese

Sheen's body will be "relocated."

A rich church must that can afford a lengthy very expensive court case instead of amicably resolving internally. But then, ultimately, it was the parishioner's money paying for this.

So much for Christian forbearance and charity.

But in death, Archbishop Sheen has attained a different kind of fame: His body has been the subject of a bitter public tussle between two Catholic bishops, each wanting to have the remains entombed in their cathedrals.
Stemming from a decision by the New York State Court of Appeals on Friday, the move brings an end to the decade-long fight over where Archbishop Sheen’s remains should be entombed.
In the past, the resolution has sometimes been to divide the body. St. Catherine of Siena is enshrined in Rome, while her head is revered in a basilica in Siena, Italy. St. Francis Xavier, the 16th-century missionary, is entombed in Goa, India, but his right arm is in Rome, in a reliquary at the Church of the Gesù.

Anyone wonder how much their court case cost?

Some things are priceless — faith, for one. Ridicule comes very cheap.

Of course they can and will depend on faith, that is the faithful, to continue filling their coffers. Oh, please, please, give to our poor Church. It pleases God and will enable to do His work.

And the faithful line up to put that dollar, five dollar or whatever they can afford into the baskets.

Meanwhile, lets sue those other diocese bastards for the body. Our cost? A million or so. Fine. No problem.

Where there is life, there is hope. Where there is hope, there is faith.

Sigh.... the fact that they are even considering Sheen discredits the entire concept. Up next, Saints Franco and Pinochet.

Old news. We've known of this last year when their president announced the name change because the Lord told him to do so.

From Fr. James Martin:

Be tough. Be free. Be hopeful.

Homily: Pre-Pride Mass, Church of St. Francis of Assisi, June 29, 2019

Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time (1 Kgs 19:16b, 19-21; Gal 5:1, 13-18; Lk 9:51-62)

Video and text

What does it mean to be a disciple? What does it mean to be a Christian? What does it mean to be free? What might it mean to be all these things as a Catholic, as an LGBT Catholic, or as the family member or friend or ally of an LGBT Catholic?

The whole thing is at:

Are there many Catholics in Russia?  I know the Soviet Union had quite a few in the western republics but I don't know about the Russian Federation.
