Stopping Smoking?? Hypnosis?? good?

I would like to know if hypnosis is helpful in smoking cessation. All the would-be "patches" and "gums" are just an alternative. ANYONE used hypnosis? Would love to hear stories! I am fed up with my "habit" and cold turkeyETC is not working!!thanx Wolfy

My father tried it and didn't have long-lasting success. Smoke Enders was what finally worked for him, since there was a support group.

Can't speak to hypnosis, and know no one for whom it's worked. A lot of people I know have had success with patch+Wellbutrin (or the new drug, can't think of name).

I tried this, and I must say it was working well but I'm one of the fortunate few who broke out in hives from Wellbutrin. It really does block the "positive" feeling from the nicotine such that, behavior-mod wise, you get nothing from it. As if you are smoking toilet paper, so it kind of discourages doing it. If you haven't tried the combo, I would recommend looking into it.

I am allergic to SOOO many things,, IREALLY dont want to introduce any MORE chemicals to my body( already blood pressure, diabetes, allergys ETC ETC> Thanx

Fair point. Just thought I'd bring it up!

thanx still searching for positive hypnonsis input

It's been my personal experience that you really have to want to stop - I did the patches and gum and quit for a while - then went back. Then my daughter sent me an article about third hand smoke and how damaging it is to the children in your life - since her oldest is a special needs child with enough issues already, I quit. Do I still crave a cigarette? Yep. But I know if I sneak one, I'll be back to buying a pack within a week. So, it's been 3 + years and I think it's for good this time. Good Luck to you Wolfy.

always like to hear positive "kick" stories!! BUT still searching. I WANT to quit, BUT just doesn't seem like in the cards right now!!

I tried hypnosis about 15 years ago and it didn't work even slightly. I eventually quit (about 10 years ago) cold turkey using nicotine patches on about the third try. It was still really hard. I think you might be best off setting a quit date and having plans in place to deal with cravings and bad moods.

I didn't use Wellbutrin when I quit (not sure it was available then, or at least I didn't know about it). But as far as putting more chemicals in your body, you are worse off continuing to smoke than to try a temporary drug that might help you get off cigarettes.

Best of luck, Wolfie!!

Many years ago she-who-must-be-obeyed quit via hypnosis and hasn't had one since.

Lazydog, PLEASE elaborate??? Thanx

My mother-in-law also quit many years ago, after 40 years of smoking, using hypnosis. It worked really well for her. Some people are easily hypnotized and others not.

My younger sister quit about 20 years ago. I never thought it would work for her. She went once and within days went screaming back to the hypnotist that it didn't work. She got a second hypnosis free. Weeks later, she got a third. She kept a pack in her freezer for years in case she got the urge again. Many years later I think she finally threw the pack out. It worked for her!

Wow Tom. Is Smoke Enders still around? They helped me stop in 1975. Are there still real, in person meetings? I smoked 2 1/2 packs/day. Haven't had a cigarette since. I was very hooked. Went through actual withdrawal. Kind of a deep depression and almost suicidal. But on the other hand, if I picked one up, I'd probably go back/Sherri

Sounds like hypnosis could be worth trying, Wolfie. You should go for it. Anything that could work to get off cigarettes is totally worth trying. You will have many ex-addicts on MOL to cheer you on, myself included.

I know someone who smoked 2 and a half packs of Camels a day from ages 15 to 35, went to a $25 hypnosis session and has been cigarette-free for more than 30 years. It's not someone who seems like they'd be susceptible to something like that--it might have been the fear of getting ripped off for the 25 bucks. But now that investment gets paid back in full about every two days---not to mention the health benefits.

About 20 years ago, my mother visited the famed Yefim Shubenstov (sp?) in Brookline, MA otherwise known as the "Mad Russian." My mother had smoked since a teen and had unsuccessfully tried to quit. After one vist with Yefim, decades long of her smoking ended. My step-father, a true naysayer and also long time smoker, didn't really want to quit but my mother said he had to if she did. Miraculously, she could no longer stand his cigarette smoking! He went, was hypnotized and went home. He never smoked again.

I quit with group hypnosis in one session. I smoked 1 ppd for 10 years and quit at age 29.

If anyone can recommend or know a good hypnosis please pm with info =)

I really would appreciate it !!

Anyone know of a good hypnotist?

After trying Smoke Enders, cold turkey, etc. I used the generic type of Wellbutrin, which isn't a new drug, but may be new for quiting smoking.  It does reduce the urge to smoke.  After taking it for awhile I used the patch and have been off the cigs for two years.

Warning Will Robinson:   Wellbutrin is a powerful drug and can screw up your head if you use it incorrectly or for too long a period.

Yes, follow the prescription you get for Wellbutrin. Remember to take it every day at the same time of day. If you don't do this, you get withdrawal symptoms, which are very unpleasant. Discuss your prescription with your doctor and make sure you understand how to take it and how not to take it.

I did it and it didn't work i wanted a cigarette as soon as i went outside.  It was kinda like having story time you close your eyes and they talk with a calm soft voice i think i may have dozed for a minute lol.  Cold turkey some jolly ranchers or lollipops no coffee and drinking thats the way to go with some exercise. I quit for a year but unfortunately started again so i need a do over

Lazy dog's better half here.  Yes, I quit in 1985 after 10 years of smoking.  I went to a group hypnosis session.  Only one was required.  I have not had a cigarette since.  Essentially, the suggestion planted (if that is the right phrase) was that every time I wanted a cigarette, I would take two deep breaths and with every two deep breaths, I would relax.  I did a lot of deep breathing those first few weeks.  The big difference for me with hypnosis is that I did not have to battle wanting a cigarette. It was replaced with breathing.  It worked for me.

A cousin of mine also had success with hypnosis to stop smoking - he'd smoked for 40-some years. He was living in CA at the time, though, so I don't have local contact info for you. (This was about 15 years ago and he is still a non-smoker.)

I went to the Mad Russian and nothing.  but had 2 friends who went to London for hypnosis, and both have been off cigs for 15 years.  Both heavy smokers.

I know a good hypnotist.  She helped me quit about 12 years ago and I haven't had a cigarette since. I've also referred a couple of clients to her for other behavioral compulsions or bad habits and she helped them as well.

I must say that I am a good subject for hypnosis - I've been hypnotized before and I go deep (during the hypnosis I don't think I am the least bit hypnotized but evidence shows otherwise).  At the time her treatment protocol was 2 sessions but I never needed the second one.  Walked out of there and haven't smoked since.  There were some initial cravings but not unmanageable.  What is interesting is prior to the treatment you have to do some preparation exercises that I think help get you in the right mindset and answer a questionnaire that seems to help her customize the hypnotic suggestions to your reasons for quitting.   Prior to this I had quit many times - cold turkey Wellbutrin (or Zyban as it's called for smoking cessation), gum but this is the time that I am certain I will never smoke again.  Whether it is the hypnosis or the determination to not have to do it again I don't know.   I will add the timing was very good for it to work on me - I was very motivated to quit - but had been unable to do so on my own.

Her name is Debra. Here is her website

Tell her Alison Grant referred you and let me know how it goes.

Edited to add:  She's a gifted psychic too.  In a different consultation she told me things that I was determined to make not come true but she apparently knew more than I did

I quit after one session. Left the office wanting to light up, but didn't and haven't since (25 years). Obviously, had I just lit up like I wanted to it wouldn't have worked.

What I'm saying is hypnosis wont make you quit, but it could help, if you're willing.
