The fires were set by the NJ State Forest Fire Service to help reduce forest undergrowth that could fuel future forest fires.
from a facebook post 15 minutes ago "The Garden State Parkway is closed in both directions in the area of mile marker 89 due to a large forest fire."

I don’t think they control burn on weekends
You're probably right. This looks much larger than the controlled fires.
and usually with a controlled, they would control is so it doesn't shut down the parkway.
I read there was a brush/forest fire in Lakewood that shutdown the parkway yesterday. (oops, just saw post by jmitw)
CNN had it as a breaking news story:
https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/15/us/new-jersey-wildfire-monday/index.html
normally the parkway would serve as a fire break....but with the winds it crossed the parkway...
Fire in the Pine Barrens reduced visibility.
