St James Gate

Wow. Paid 24 bucks for a minuscule lobster roll tonight. I’ve had them before here and they were great. I complained and waitress took back. And said cook weighed it and it indeed was the same 3oz portion they serve. However, was on a tiny roll that apparently they were using up because they’re closing for a week. Ridiculous rationale. Lost a customer on that one.

I've never understood the appeal of St. James Gate for food.

$24 for a 3 oz lobster roll is absurd.  I buy 8-12 oz lobster rolls for that price in Cape Cod.

They are just fine for burgers etc.  I would never order a lobster roll there.

Used to go there regularly (for burgers & mussels in broth), but have not been back since the event where Jimmy fought with a customer.   If you want a lobster roll, go to Freeman's.

That ain't nuthin'.  Go to a New England McDonalds where they sell lobster rolls for $6.00 (last time I got one). Don't know what the price is now.

Go to Maine for any reason...............but the lobster in any form are a true delight

I got a Rock Lobster on YouTube for Free.

Interesting. I swore I'd never go in  in  there again after a particularity heinous and disgusting Jimmy performance. That must have been 6 or 7 years ago. Maybe longer. (And I haven't.)

It's the only place in town where one can hear others talk, and doesn't have hard surfaces.

I never went back after the Incident either. Didn't appear to hurt their business much, though.

recent lunch plus two pops and healthy tip was around 30 bucks.  approaching one third of a certain other place.  lesser quality and atmosphere? yes.  lesser service? negative.  plus better tv coverage.

I think our area has a great variety of really good food, but in my experience there are just certain things that, if you search for them here, you're just going to be disappointed: Philly cheesesteak, cajun food exactly like what you had when you were down South, huge slab perfectly aged and grilled steak, taco exactly like the one from that East L.A. food truck, Pakistani food. I'd put lobster rolls on the list too.

Not yet... but I found their (expensive) chocolate babka and peach danish far too addictive.

No.  I have been making a weekly pilgrimage to Montclair Bread Co.  I will give Liv Breads a try.  MBC is great but it is a long haul and sometimes, by the time I get over there, they are out.

I keep meaning to get to the Breadstand on Boyden, but it's better for my waistline that I haven't.

Once you make the Smitten Kichen babka, you will never have to order it again.  (And it freezes decently as well)

I don’t eat gluten, but this thing is worth all the agony that comes with it.

To be fair, their pastries are very good.  Good coffee too. Honestly, just good all the way around.

The service at SJG is "lesser" in my humble opinion.

I wouldn't say lesser, just not pretentious. SJG is not my "favorite" place, but I wish more establishment were closer to their price/value point. And that they'd freshen the menu a bit.

I think the less pretentious atmosphere is what we like about the place. I agree about freshening up the menu. Some of the basics are pretty damn good, but like most restaurants, I have had some failures on the quality occasionally. Liked over cooked french fries.  Running a restaurant is a tough business...

It would be nice if they cleaned the place once in a while.

Is Steve Hayek still running the kitchen?

It never seemed unclean to me. But then, we mostly seem to find a crowd when we are there, and it might be harder to notice.

Guess I need to watch more cooking shows...
