Squirrel!!!!!!!!

I've had three squirrels in my house since moving in. Last time around (4th of July) I hired a wildlife guy who would find the point of entry and advise on how to fortify the house. Followed all the advice but last night heard another squirrel. So apparently his missed this spot.  Nuts!

Climbed up on the roof today and found the suspected entrance. Sure enough, the little monster stuck his head out of the hole. It also explains why my bathroom is freezing in the winter.

So uh, now what?!?!?!?

I would call another exterminator, who will set up cage-like devices at the entry points that will let the little bastards out, but not back in. Then, you can set about having their entrance holes sealed up in such a way they can't get back in. Meanwhile, use Hav-a-heart traps inside the house in attic and basement areas where they are like to spend any time (for us, it was the eaves of our finished attic). I will leave it to you what you decided to do with any specimens you catch.

You should consider taking a look at trees near the house, cutting back any branches that overhang the roof and can function as ladders for the squirrels to get onto the roof, and from there into the house.

I lived in a building where the idiot landlord plugged the hole with the squirrel inside...luckily I had an attic hatch..opened it, propped the front door open and waited for it to leave....

That's why I suggested some Hav-a-Hart traps, in case a squirrel refused to leave at the right time.

I have a squirrel trap if you wish to borrow it. We used it for flying squirrels in our sons room. Nice thing about them is they are nocturnal and typically live in colonies of up to twenty...it had made a nest in his chest of drawers.

PM me if you would like to borrow the trap. Its one of those cage type with doors at each end, doesn't injure the animal. Of course then you have to figure out how far to drive to let the little bugger out in the wild.

yes, releasing them is the tricky bit. Try Ohio.

shhhhhh... Technically, I think that's illegal...

5 miles, tested and known to work

Jerry Buckingham (local exterminator; have lost count of the rodents & bugs he's removed from our house) is fantastic and compassionate -- (973) 762-6760. Dave De Castro has patched up a couple of exterior bird and rodent entry points around our house http://www.yellowpages.com/nationwide/mip/dave-decastro-exterior-home-repairs-451056375

Or you could always get a hav-a-hart trap, keep the critters, and Google "burgoo."

thanks for the suggestions (and trap offer). Unfortunately need an expert as the monster has chewed theough some (new) but rotted wood behind gutter.

Dave DeCastro replaced some gutters for us when we had a similar problem.

We had a very large hole in our roof when raccoons decided to raise their young up there. Dave DeCastro was able to repair the damage.

I had a squirrel problem in my house a few years back.  The exterminator said that they were climbing up a tree which grew next to my house and then jumping onto the attic.  I cut the tree, but the squirrels didn't go away.  They destroyed the wood frames to some nice drawings that I had, they urinated all over everything I had stored in the attic, they ate the drawer to an antique roll-top desk that I was waiting to restore, and I was told that they would get into the electric wires and create a fire.  Jerry Buckingham found the entrance, placed a trap so that they could get out but not in, and resolved my squirrel problem forever.  Best money I ever spent.

The squirrels were pissed off when Jerry blocked their entrance, and they came to my deck to let me know how they felt.  It was funny, and somewhat scary that they knew so much about my house and me.  I cut a few more trees after they had their tantrum.  But I did feel badly for them too, a little bit, it was winter, and i didn't know if they knew how to build nests.  But the hawk took care of the problem for good.

I had a squirrel move into the attic of our newly renovated house. Its a lovely Victorian with a steep roof and a newly finished attic.....I am not keen on squirrel houseguests! Jerry was great assistance, quick and resourceful. He referred me to GotWildlife (877)FURFIND, as the steepness of our roof and the height of our attic was literally out of Jerry's reach. Luca from GotWildlife was terrific, took care of our situation same day. Now we have a one-way-door attached to their "main entrance", for a week, until everyone has left the attic, as well as all eaves sealed with aluminum corners so squirrels cannot bite their way back in. Think this should take care of it, I certainly hope so!

Jerry is wonderful. He's helped us deal woth with several pests, but we've never had an issue with squirrels. That surprises me after reading this thread. Trees touch our house. Squirrels run all over the roof, but they never break in. I guess our attic is not as nice as Astro'sgrin.

Yeah, he helped me with my flying squirrel problem. I would recommend him any day.
