My family (with 2 girls of ages 7 & 10) are free from now to the end of the week on Spring Break. We're looking for suggestions on fun day trips / overnight stays (no exceeding a 4-5 hours drive away) in this area during this time of the year.
Washington DC is great fun. All of the museums are free, the train ride is a blast, no car needed and given the temps you might want an indoor spring break if you stay in the NE.
I would recommend Baltimore. Ton of things for the kids to do: aquarium, science museum, children's museum, walking around fells point and inner harbor, pirates cruise...
Second Baltimore, but if you don't want to go that far look into Mystic, Ct. Seaport, Aquarium, Mystic Pizza, Carousel at Watch Hill (RI). Newport, RI is nice also (but you may like it more than the kids).
Brandywine Valley...Finger Lakes (although still not ideal weather maybe)...a little more than 4-5 hours but Charlottesville VA and surrounding area. Princeton/Grounds for Sculpture.
i really enjoyed taking the amtrak up to vt (its a little long 8 hours) - maybe look at the amtrak line and find a fun town -- love boston, great aquarium and museums
Since you've done the major big cities, how about Hershey Park and Lancaster or Litiz Pennsylvania? I recall Crystal Cave in Kutztown and Steamtown in Scranton being a good trip for the kids. For New Jersey, I would explore various shore towns.
I would go a bit farther south and suggest Williamsburg. It's a unique place in the US w lots of history and beautifully restored buildings. Instead of driving down 95, I would drive down the GSP and spend the night in Cape May (also a gem...you could just stay there). Next morning, board the ferry to Lewes DL and drive down the Eastern Shore and take the Cheseapeak Bay Bridge Tunnel to Va Beach and head through Norfolk and Newport News on the way. (Just watch your speed through all the little towns on the eastern shore)
