Robert Chandross, R.I.P

I just noticed an obituary for Dr. Chandross, who died a few weeks ago.  We were often on the opposite side of the issues in local politics, during some contentious times, but I want to salute him for the passion and concern that he brought to Village politics (and to MOL, in the day), whatever the issues might be.

My condolences to his family.

(Edited to fix his title)

May I ask what his user name was on MOL?

I met him at town hall and enjoyed his activism. I had a few fun conversations with him. We were on the same side when it came to our failed animal policies. I'll miss his voice.

Prof Chandross famously said of the former VP's mouth : "Your mouth should be washed out with soap!"  -   while addressing the Trustees at a BOT meeting about 4 years ago.

I believe he used a whole series of names over the years?  Someone with a better memory will have to answer this.

Not zoinks, I hope?

(Edited to remove hints)

I wish someone could be more specific so we could know who this MOL member is. In any case, rest In Peace.

I don’t generally out people on MOL, even in death.  If the moderators feel differently, they can be more specific.  Those who had active local political conversations with him (as I did) know who I mean.

Suffice it to say someone who cared about South Orange and wasn't afraid to speak out.  RIP

Then possibly you should have only used his MOL and not his real name in the first place since this IS MOL and that’s how we would have known him...

oh no...I had not heard about this.

Robert was VERY passionate and outspoken about the Village, but I always said his bark was worse than his bite.  He was a very caring a gentle person, when you got to know him.  I am very sad to hear the news.

I disagree Scully (and I didn't know his screen name by the way). I think what the OP did was respectful and appropriate. What you're suggesting would have outed him (tying a real life obit to this OP would not have been rocket science).

In any event it seems there are plenty on MOL who did know him in real life and real life (and death) and words spoken in real life are more important than this message board even if they overlap.

plenty more may have known him and won’t ever know it.

Then we’ll have to agree to disagree I suppose...

He was most known for railing against the financial mismanagement of SOPAC, the Village budget and the Animal Shelter.  Search for any old BOT Meetings (prior to 2013) and he was quite prominent during public comments. Together with Joel Dranove (who also passed away) and John Purkert (who moved away), they were all instrumental in keeping the BOT honest (myself included).  Very sad to hear of his passing.

I didn't know him IRL, may or may not have known him through his MOL persona.  I do want to take this opportunity to express my condolences to his friends and family.  May he rest in peace and may his memory be a blessing.

More than likely those who didn't read carefully the South Orange threads would not have known his "MOL persona".  Bob was a member of Kol Rina where I belong as well. I am sorry that I didn't get to know him that well there but do know his wife. In any event, may his memory be a blessing for the entire family and community of mourners.

I will let Linda know about this thread. He wasn’t ill for very long. I enjoyed his caustic sense of humour and our occasional arguments, mostly in the Library. May his memory be for a blessing

Well, it’s obviously an insider thing but I do wish his family comfort and am sorry that the MOL community was diminished by his loss...

Grappled with him often on matters of SOPAC (and a few others), even when we agreed (!).  RIP.

Wow - I'm so sad to read this.  I saw his wife a couple weeks ago and I asked about Bob and she had indicated he wasn't feeling well.  I should have reached out...  Bob was fierce and unapologetically un-diplomatic to say the least but he paid attention and took time to participate not just on MOL but attend meetings.  I received missives regularly from him but certainly enjoyed him as a person and community member.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.  RIP.
