Robberies in town.
The shore has been seeing an increase in home break-ins and random acts of violence this summer. On another thread, I posted about installing security — local police have advised been proactive and recommended home owners do so. A month ago, after a front door kick-in burglary, The police caught the perp, within a week, by collecting videos from home security systems in the neighborhood.
There’s also an increase in drug overdosing as well. That kicking in the door/home invasion issue is the worst.

Yes, and there's not much of a police presence these days. Maybe it's time to bring back the auxiliary police?

My neighbors camera and my other neighbor’s presence saw a car pull up on Richmond Avenue and several perpetrators try to enter three cars, two of them mine, this morning. The police immediately responded in force . The camera got a picture of the perps. The police reminded us to make sure our cars are locked (all of ours were) and. To make sure we have exterior lights on our properties for nighttime.

The police have been saying that for years, leave the outside lights on all night. Lock the cars and not leave any valuables in the car either. that’s everywhere. There’s been carjackings in millburn perpetrated by teenagers. The older criminals drive the teenagers to the towns they target. Teenagers get lighter sentences if caught.
Im just worried that people with guns are randomly driving around town looking for young people who are engrossed in their phones to rob them. It’s unnerving. I hardly see kids walking around at night these days, times have changed.

I see quite a few kids from maplewood at the skate park too. They use the train and hop off at Arlington avenue. Harrison street is full of great apartments now. Your location is great, but some people hear the words “East Orange” and the warning lights are triggered. But it’s good for retired people.
I remember East Orange as an elegant shopping destination. Central Ave and and Main St had many big department stores , such as Best &co, Russeks , Kresske, (spelling is off?) dress shops, jewelers, fine restaurants, movie theatres, 5&10, etc etc. S.Harrison St was lined with lovely apartment buildings, medical offices, etc. Both my husband and I worked in East Orange in the ‘50s -‘60s.

I guess the heydays of East Orange were from the 20's to 50's. Suburbs spread out from Newark, beginning with the building of the Lackawanna railroad. The wealthy came first, and bought the mansions in East Orange, Orange, S.O. and so forth.
Tuesdays were "Lady's Days" at the department stores in Newark. ..... Orbach's Haines and so forth. When I worked in Newark in the 60's, the older employees recalled the Tuesdays when chauffeur driven limos from East Orange and suburbs, would pull up to the department stores at lunch time and discharge their passengers. Several department stores had restaurants in back or in the basements of the stores. Haines still had an upscale restaurant in the early 60's.
After the riots ---- it all went to seed. One by one, the department stores went out of business. Bamberger's was one of the last to go but it went from 10 floors of merchandise, to 6 to... oh well.
The East Orange mansions stayed but most fell into disrepair, were divided into apartments and single room rentals and finally, most were demolished.
Also in East Orange don't forget B Altman,Franklin Simon and Doop's. Altman and Doop's moved to the Short Hills Mall. At that time the Mall was open,not enclosed, Hahne's moved from Newark to Montclair.

Almost all car thefts and car break-ins in SOMA are due to people leaving their car unlocked and in some cases leaving the keys in the car. Most of these could be prevented by simply locking one's car.
What makes you write that? Crime in Chile is escalating to unbelievable levels I think because of the inflation that is unlike anything seen in many, many decades.
Yahoo is right. Crime is up everywhere, but we are getting a reputation as a great place for car thieves and petty criminals to work because we make it so damned easy.

I write this because of what is reported by our police departments. Just read the police blotter and they explain over and over that cars are left unlocked.
For example, here is an article from Tapinto in 2021. Stealing cars is mostly a crime of opportunity, at least in our immediate area.
7 vehicles were stolen in Maplewood May 5th - 19th. Here are contributing factors for each car:
Car left running during a delivery
Spare key left in the car
Car left running while driver was in Wawa
Car left running while driver was in 7-11
Unlocked car contained spare FOB
Car left running while customer was in Wawa
Attempted theft with damaged ignition, not clear if the car was unlocked or not

Every single day someone posts on FB or next door about their car being broken into or stolen, and almost all are unlocked, or better yet unlocked with the key fob left in. It is disheartening that people will do so little to protect themselves. It opens all of us up to having these creeps around.
if people around here are this incredibly naive about not locking their doors/cars, what else are they naive about.

Same in MB/SH. Plenty of unlocked vehicles with key fobs left in the car. I just don't get it.
When we were kids my dad used to tell us that if our bicycles were stolen while they were locked up, he would buy us new bicycles. But if they were stolen when we just left them lying around, we were on our own. That philosophy just naturally carried over for me when I got my first car, and I still always lock it even if I'm just running in to pick up a pizza or whatever.
And having worked for a dozen years as a 911 dispatcher, I can tell you that the first question you're going to be asked when you call to report a car stolen or broken into is "was it locked?". The priority of the case may be affected by your answer.
A police officer from an area town recently pointed out something to me that I had to admit had never entered my brain. The newer, more expensive cars have rearview mirrors that fold in when you turn off and lock the car. He pointed out that all criminals have to do is drive down a street and look for valuable cars with mirrors sticking out to know who hasn’t bothered to lock their car. He said statistically a lot of those cars are going to have the fob in it or nearby, which he basically described as catching fish in a barrel.
Daughter recently attended an orientation for grad school part of which was conducted by campus police. Here's a quote: "If you leave your phone on the desk in the library and walk away and someone takes it that's not a theft, it's a donation."
Has me thinking.

....though I did feel I might be caught in a mass shooting coming out of Shoprite the other night @ 9:30. Shooting started in Forman's Mills pkg lot, and a parade of cars sped down S. Harrison toward 280, shooting at each other. There's been an uptick in the sound of gunshots since summer began, but I think it's happening everywhere. So sad the way violence and guns have become part of the American Way. This was definitely out of the norm. I think the mayor has done a great job at lowering crime in East Orange since I moved here in 2015; cameras everywhere, spotlights in cop cars and a strong police presence throughout the city.
My neighbornood is different from yours, being a block from the Brick Church station. If anyone in your building shops at Shoprite, there's probably a shuttle to take them back & forth. I had NEVER felt unsafe here before this. Though when I'm on the street, it's usually to walk my 45 lb dog. She seems to be all the protection I need. i find people in my neighborhood to be quite friendly and unthreatening

this will stop when Insurance companies say enough is enough and stop paying out for unlocked or cars left running
