A later Nixle alert limited the closure on Valley to the stretch between Oakview and North Crescent. Crews were digging there when I went for my walk at about 10 am this morning.
I think this line:
On Wednesday, October 1st, sections of Valley Street will be closed between Edgewood Place and North Crescent.
Means it will be happening between those two streets beginning from today, not that they'll be doing that whole stretch today. But what do I know, the Nixle alerts for this job have been a mess to figure out, so I think they're making up the whole thing as they go.
We should start another thread about our roads getting destroyed by the utility companies.

the work on Valley needs to be done because the county wants to repave the street before the end of the paving season. Or we can just keep the lead pipes, despite the state mandate.

Prospect has been a disaster for several years (also a county road). Why do they not pave Prospect?

Prospect is NOT a county road. Maplewood plans to repave their portion in 2026.

Thank you, Joan. I wondered why S.O. paved their section but not Maplewood.
So now that NJAW is done on Prospect the town can get to paving it. Another example of doing things correctly, unlike some folks here are claiming.

NJAW had to complete their work first. Similarly, the County is waiting for NJAW to finish their work before completing the remaining intersection work on Valley street followed by milling and paving.
It’s a pleasant change to drive on Richmond… and Burroughs way… I wonder how Jamie’s suspension is faring after years of those potholes…
Just today as I was going down Springfield avenue, I was thinking maybe we should have a thread on road closures. Looks like the center turn lanes they’re painting will leave the through lane rather narrow though.
Who remembers the stamped brick crosswalks some 20 years ago?
Another problems with the road closures is that they are not coordinated. There have been times when one road is closed due to the American Society of Pothole repairers. Then you prepare turn off of that road and the American Tree Lovers Association is taking down a tree so you can't go on that road, either.
This problem is more pronounced in S.O, but Mpl also has its fair share.
These closures require police notification since they are accompanied by police cars. Can't someone put down their donut and suggest that maybe one or two of the jobs be scheduled on a different day?

Can we add sidewalk closings to road closure thread? NJAW is making many sidewalks impassible while completely blocking the roadway as well. There were similar problems when new construction on SA closed sidewalks without warning.

Yes, and I think it's on the paving schedule.
They would never start paving prospect, while the utility companies are digging up valley…
The problem is, not everyone driving on valley and prospect are familiar with the area. It’s a main connection between union and Essex counties. Just look how annoyed they get if they encounter a driver going 5 mph above the limit of 25 on those two roads…

FWIW: The section of Prospect near the high school was still being worked on as of last week.

They are going by mailing address and have not done all of the cross streets yet. Some corner properties still have not been done because of this and if their service lines are on Prospect Street more digging on Prospect may be needed. Hopefully, the paving on Prospect will not be done until all of the corner properties have been checked.

I guess we don't know for sure, but the paint markings in the street make the residents of my block suspect that NJAW is going to tear it up soon after it was just repaved last year. I know that we agitated for that for a number of years, but if they knew that this was coming, perhaps they should have waited on NJAW. I'm not impressed with what I have seen to date of the NJAW patch jobs. Also, wasn't it less than ten years ago that Prospect was repaved? I know that our street had been waiting over 30 years and, while Prospect is certainly busier, it makes me wonder why we had to wait more than three times as long.

I have never been able to decipher Maplewood's paving "schedule." Our road was not fully repaved for over twenty years despite being horrendous shape while others were repaved multiple times during the same time period. There have also been several streets that were repaved and then ripped up for utility work within the next year or two. I don't think the utilities coordinate with our town nearly as much as they should.
It used to be that most street repaving was paid for through community development block grants. It is possible that only certain streets were eligible for this funding though I do not know the criteria used. It is possible that is still the case.
Prospect Street is among the very most heavily traveled local streets and therefore received more frequent attention than most other streets in town.
