Rise in Waste Management Price

I was shocked to get my garbage bill. There was a rise of  $70.20 for 1 barrel for a senior citizen. Instead of $145.30 a quarter it is now $215,50 a quarter. Did anyone else have such an increase? Tried to call them without success. I'm ready to switch. Who do I call? Is it worth it to make the change?

Switch to Waste Industries. It's totally worth it.

https://www.waste-industries.com/

Yeah, we’re switching too…

You know, for all the damn property taxes people pay, to still have to pay for garbage disposal it’s ridiculous. Eventually there will come a time, maybe not in my lifetime, but it will come a time when everyone will have to put their garbage out to the curb, and the town will take care of paying for garbage disposal from the property taxes.
but no… turf! Turf!

With Waste Industries’ tag program, the quarterly cost is $47.49 plus $1 for each 13-gallon kitchen bag and $2 for each 30-gallon yard bag. Given that my wife and I average maybe three kitchen bags and one yard bag a month, that’s less than $63 a quarter.

I’m also always very happy with the personal service whenever I call to order tags or have a question.

Based on what I have seen from Waste Management in commercial buildings I will NEVER hire them for my home trash.

I switched to WI when my bill from WM more than doubled with no advanced warning or explanation (even when I phoned and asked).  WI has proven more reliable, more comprehensive, and far easier to contact.  I am glad I switched.

Silly me. I suggested about two years ago, that maybe the town should investigate town service. I was honked on for my effort.

Millburn and Summit have town service. A difference is that you are not paying for profit or stock dividends with town service.

There’s no need to worry about stock dividends at Waste Industries. It’s not a publicly listed company.

Pay as you throw is better for the environment.  There is a tendency to produce less waste if you pay for a service directly rather than have it included in your real property tax bill.

--- and the owners don't want to make a profit above the costs of running the trucks and tipping fee?

Sounds like a great business plan. Or are they a charity?

Yes.

No.

My previous reply addressed only your reference to stock dividends.

Waste pickup by the town will never happen.

Recycling has a small chance.

I'm making the switch to Waste Industries!

Tell us how it goes/if it's easy to do!

(And yes, DaveSchmidt, I know we've had this conversation before, but I'm a "hates picking up the phone" kinda guy.)

Our new WM bill is about $225.  We’ve been content with WM for many years so I’d like to get a handle on reasonable expectations for switching.  We’re just 2 adults who do a lot of recycling. Our guess is about 6 kitchen bags a week. Does WI take contractor bags?

Does anyone currently using WI have a guesstimate of your quarterly bill?

We have had Waste Industries for years and years.  The plan we have is for one can, twice a week pick up.  Costs us about $110 per quarter.  They will take anything that is in the can (including contractor bags).  We have also occasionally put a contractor bag on top of the can that already had a kitchen bag or two in it, and they took it.  (This is maybe once or twice a year, not a regular occurrence.)

As I recall, when Fred Profeta was Mayor he tried something like what you are referring to.  Of course the IDIOT parade put a stop to it.

With WI one can twice per week is about $90 per quarter ($30/month).  6 bags per week may be slightly more than this service.

Mine is posted above. In WI’s tag program, six kitchen bags a week would be $47.49 + (6 x $1 x 12 weeks) = $119.49.

With that bag total, it sounds like the regular program may be a better deal for you.

6 bags a week? We do 2-3 bags a week for a family of 4.

We have two-can pick-up twice a week for ~$105 per quarter. I have considered reducing it to one can per week but we have the occasional clean out which requires two cans.

Just to break down the details of our bill for one-can-2x-a-week, the charge for the service is about $90 per quarter ($91.38), but they do add a fuel surcharge onto it, which varies, but was $13.05 for the quarter beginning Jan 1 2024.  So, with fuel surcharge, our bill is in the $100-$110 per quarter range.

With either service, the cost is depending on the size of the can. 30 gallon, 40, 64 or 90.

In WI’s tag service, the cost depends on the size of the bag, not the can.

THANKS EVERYBODY!!!

Real numbers are such a giant help when we discuss prices, costs etc..  We currently have the 1 can twice a week plan so we’ll just shift to WI’s equivalent flat rate plan.  That way we won’t have to make any changes to lifestyle…until we’re ready.

A bit of follow-up:

WI. (908) 436-1976

1 can twice a week:  $90 / quarter.  (+ credit card surcharge)

Tag program NOT available to new customers.
We will definitely NOT use CC.  I’m not going to pay x% EXTRA to reduce their admin. costs.  At least vzn reduces by $10/mo. for cc.

Did you ask for their senior rate?  It could be lower than what they quoted you.

THANKS, JOAN.

Yesterday’s phone call was our first info gathering call in years.  Since we just paid for this quarter with WM we’ll be making the shift May 1.  Your point has been added to the list of questions for when we call.

I made the switch. It sounds great. Begin on Tuesday.

Today I called W.I. to make sure they could take our account beginning Tuesday. They can.

Then I called W.M. to cancel their service.

"Why do you want to cancel? (Good question). Me:"W.Il price is lower."

W.M. " If I can offer a lower price than our competitor, would you stay with us?"

They ended up beating W.I.s price by $50.00 per quarter. I don't get to put stuff out to the curb, but that's ok.
