Reflections on MMS Town Hall Meeting

We have incredibly thoughtful, hardworking and attentive principals, staff and teachers at MMS and CHS for which we should all be grateful.

As witnessed by the conversations last night we all want the same for all our kids, let's try to continue to work together.

There is a tiny fraction of the population at each school that are repeat offenders and highly disruptive in many ways to the entire school. There is NOT some sudden horrible turn in the schools where all our children are under threat.

The question becomes how to respond best to the disruptive kids. There are often a multitude of complicated issues going on with these kids. It is easy to say "throw them out" and indeed some just do not belong within the general school population. Agreed that even a hint of violence is in no way to be tolerated at any time. But where do they go? As a community, it is both our legal and moral responsibility to educate and do the best for these kids. Costs for transport and out of district schooling are high, we no longer have the Montrose alternative. It is a situation that if addressed in the best case scenario manner is expensive and labor intensive.

Many other issues were brought up that are valid and are often already being addressed, but we need to continue to do better. We have a bright, creative, caring community. Let's brainstorm some ways to support all our children and schools instead of pointing fingers. And for the programs that are costly we may have to make some hard choices, look for grants, utilize volunteerism and technology etc.

We need intervention in the elementary schools for at risk kids, programs to educate and eliminate all bullying, Student Resource Officers in both middle schools and high school and perhaps elementary schools. The perception and/or culture that may not support kids of color as well as white kids needs to be changed. Home support or mentoring for parents who don't know how to navigate or help their kids. Perhaps we can expand upon some of the existing programs such as Achieve and peer mentoring at CHS. To name a few.

Perhaps in the last weeks of school and over the summer we can get input from the kids and teachers in the schools about what is working and suggestions on what can be done better, and where the issues lie. Parents can talk about it all day long, but kids and teachers are actually living the experience of our schools and systems.

Why start a new thread when there is an active thread on the subject?

maybe because it's more appropriate to put thoughtful reflections here, and not in one that screams out in ALL CAPS about our "sorry schools?"

There is a wide spectrum of opinions on that thread. It serves the purpose. No need for opening another thread.

Maybe just try to get over it and let people discuss the issue on the thread of their choosing. Thanks.
