Refacing cabinets

Has anyone ever done this? Can you recommend someone to talk to? I know the cabinets are not standard size. I am wondering if what I want is even possible, and how much it would cost.

A lot of refacing is ugly and looks cheap. You might be better off painting them, if possible.

We painted ours and replaced the hardware. It was a lot of work, but it looks pretty good! Another good compromise option if you don't want to do a full cabinet replacement is to order new doors.

If you need custom-sized doors, it's going to be so costly that it makes more sense to buy new cabinets. Agree that painting can be a good interim step, but also agree that this is a labor-intensive project.

Having custom sized doors made isn't costly at all. Try Scherrs - I've used them multiple times.

And it's not the refacing that's "cheap looking". It's the materials used!

Do NOT use Sears refacing. Very hard sell, expensive (the estimate was more than the custom doors we had made!), and cheap materials.

Quite a few years ago we had a custom woodworker make new doors for our cabinets, make new drawers, and also make a custom cabinet for an empty corner of the kitchen.

To refresh (and change the color) of the base cabinets, we had a handyman sand and stain the existing base cabinets (with the same stain the woodworker was using on the new doors). I did the final varnish/polyurethane layers on the old frames since it took several days of drying between each application.

A freind said that home cheapo was also a less than pleasant sales call

I'm not advocating that anyone use Home Depot, but the person who came to us to go over what refacing entails was absolutely fine. In the end we did not choose to use them. He have may hung in somewhat to make the sale, but it was not a hard sale.

BTW in somewhat same vein....any experience(s) with Bath fitters? or would rather I start a diff thread
