Question about an airline booking error

Entirely my fault. I booked three international tickets for a family trip in late summer. My mother and I  share the same last name; my sister has used a married name for more than 30 years. In booking the tickets I mistakenly entered our family name for all three of us.

The airline has sent us in circles via email, phone and Twitter, and language may be a barrier. Is there a simple way to fix this?

Good morning-I don't think there is a simple way--but a couple of thoughts:

Does your sister use her maiden name as a middle name and is it shown on her passport? That will probably help, but still might not guarantee easy transit. Does the airline have a ticket office/counter at Newark airport or in NYC? I believe some, esp foreign carriers, still have city ticket counters.

In my experience, if you call repeatedly, you will eventually get someone who can help. Otherwise, you will probably have to follow the airline's procedure to change/rebook and pay required fee.

Good luck!

A woman I know mistakenly purchased an international ticket under her married name even though all of her ID was in her maiden name (long story) and she was able to fly by showing her marriage certificate to show that she was both Jane Doe and Jane Smith

This was post 9-11, but about 10 years ago, so I don’t know if regulation have tightened even more since then

Maybe you need to go face to face with someone at airport desk (do they still have those airline ticket offices in NYC?  Maybe there)

Is the problem that the ticket does not match her Passport?

Yes. She’s digging up the marriage and birth certificates!

Perhaps a notarized letter will help, as well.

This needs to be fixed. You can go to one airport and be allowed in and then be surprised at your return airport when they disallow it.

Yes, you definitely need to fix this prior to departure. Names on tickets must match names on passports
