Anyone know of a nearby bakery or grocery that sells it and is open?
They used to carry one at Zaro's in Newark Penn Station but that is not local, nor do I know if it is open. I did see one, but didn't buy it, in ShopRite, which has their own bakery and also imports from elsewhere. There's a Russian food store, Babuschka's, in the ShopRite strip mall in Livingston that has lots of Russian/Lithuanian breads, but I don't remember seeing it. (If I do when I go, I"ll update this.)
I used to get it all the time as a kid. Haven't had it in ages. Called it 'Raisin pumpernickel' though. Now I'm craving it too, darnit...

Thanks Dianaid! I’ll make some calls later this morning.

Yeah, I think your name is more common. Didn’t know until yesterday that this is a New York bread. I haven’t had it in years either. Being cooped up has me thinking about foods from childhood for some reason.
Looks great! What recipe did you use? I actually have never made bread before, but that is tempting...

I’ve never made bread either. I told my wife last weekend that I “could follow any recipe”, so I had to follow through.
Truth be told, it wasn’t a lot of “work”, but I did not expect all of the time for the dough to rise. Over 8 hours in total! Kind of a time-sink, but what else do we have to do? ;-)
Start early if you do it. I started mid-afternoon - huge mistake!
Tasted very good though. Two loaves left!
I like mine with walnuts or pecans, the way I first had it from the bakery at Bloomingdale's. Yum, this looks like a fun project.

you didn't make them in a bread loaf pan?
Recipe said 3 round loaves.
The only thing that drove me a bit nuts was that it called for 3 separate rise times - 4 hours, 2 hours, 2 hours.
if I do it again I'll see if I can find a different recipe.
