Peeple - social media hits its nadir

Can someone not stop this pair of sociopaths?

This actually turns my stomach.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-intersect/wp/2015/09/30/everyone-you-know-will-be-able-to-rate-you-on-the-terrifying-yelp-for-people-whether-you-want-them-to-or-not/

[T]he most surprising thing about Peeple — basically Yelp, but for
humans — may be the fact that no one has yet had the gall to launch
something like it.
When the app does launch, probably in late November, you will be able
to assign reviews and one- to five-star ratings to everyone you know:
your exes, your co-workers, the old guy who lives next door. You can’t
opt out — once someone puts your name in the Peeple system, it’s there
unless you violate the site’s terms of service. And you can’t delete bad
or biased reviews — that would defeat the whole purpose…

“People do so much research when they buy a car or make those kinds
of decisions,” said Julia Cordray, one of the app’s founders. “Why not
do the same kind of research on other aspects of your life?”

This is, in a nutshell, Cordray’s pitch for the app — the one she has
been making to development companies, private shareholders, and Silicon
Valley venture capitalists. (As of Monday, the company’s shares put its
value at $7.6 million.)

A bubbly, no-holds-barred “trendy lady”
with a marketing degree and two recruiting companies, Cordray sees no
reason you wouldn’t want to “showcase your character” online. Co-founder
Nicole McCullough comes at the app from a different angle: As a mother
of two in an era when people don’t always know their neighbors, she
wanted something to help her decide whom to trust with her kids…

“As two empathetic, female entrepreneurs in the tech space, we want
to spread love and positivity,” Cordray stressed. “We want to opera
te
with thoughtfulness.”

Unfortunately for the millions of people who could soon find
themselves the unwilling subjects — make that objects — of Cordray’s
app, her thoughts do not appear to have shed light on certain very
critical issues, such as consent and bias and accuracy and the
fundamental wrongness of assigning a number value to a person…

Repulsive. This will not end well. You can just know that.

god - imagine if it becomes successful, even for a short time.

It reminded me of "Hot or Not" from 15 years ago...

You're late on condemning this.

Yes, I am, but my title is better. oh oh

Based on his speed, though, I'm going to give project37 a 7, while you get a 5 for not checking for a similar thread

I see what you did there, and I'll need your cell phone number

I saw this app mentioned on The Onion. Because that's where it belongs. Its like when I worked in the corporate world and the Dilbert cartoon I had pinned on my cubicle wall became reality.

If it's like Yelp all you need to do is buy ads and they'll delete negative reviews.

If we buy an ad here can I delete negative comments about me?

If I buy enough ads, can I pick a thread to delete?

A boy can dream. blank stare

You mean like the 5-bladed Gillette razor?

And when will the razor madness end? How many blades can dance on the head of a razor handle?

These two evidently think they are the ish and could never be judged negatively by anyone. Watch them develop it where they are the only two people who can opt out of judgement.

This is ripe for Mean Girls, Bullies and adults with a lot of time on their hands to be horrid towards others.

Don't ask me. I use one of these on my crazy throwback Mad Men face.

Ha. I have the same one. I mean - I also have a beard at the moment. But when I do shave...you get the point.

If I post on this thread, does my rating drop?

Anyway, this poor guy:

Does anyone want to bet that we will start getting spam in our email that says "someone posted about you on Peeple" And then of course you will need to create an account to see it.

I'm using Col. Conk soap, not a huge fan of it. Too watery. But I did buy 3 of them so I'll suffer until they're used up and go back to Taylor of Old Bond St.

I figure I'm safe since I never annoy anyone, and I won't create an account, so no one can post evil lies about me. Oh wait. Someone could probably create an account in my name, and then I'm screwed.

It might be the whole joke.

Razor madness? What razor madness?

Only 5 blades is NOT madness...

the blade Mach 15 is madness.

It's so big you hold it in place and move your face.

Isn't this an invitation to lots and lots of lawsuits for libel?

This thing has 1000 ways to go wrong. And not 1 to go right.

Then it should be short-lived.

Article in NYT's today:

‘Yelp for People’ App Founder Says Peeple Won’t Be ‘Shamed Into Submission’

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/06/technology/yelp-for-people-app-founder-says-it-wont-be-shamed-into-submission.html?_r=0

This is starting to feel like a publicity stunt for an entirely different App.

"After some soul searching we've decided to alter our plan, Peeple will now focus on frozen yogurt delivery (or whatever nonsense is getting funded these days."
