NOAA Scientists Fly through Hurricane (Emily) Eye

This experience would be on my bucket list but they probably don't let civilians fly.  Besides, there was no sign of a drink cart; no way I'd go sober without freaking out.   grrr   At one point, you can hear loud rattling, like rocks hitting the plane.  Could it have been hail?

I'm not sure if it is considered hail if it has not fallen from the sky yet but it would likely be ice chunks of some sort, or flying monkeys.

Wouldn't be hail, hurricanes don't really have hail in them.

I think that some of the pics of this eyewall are some of the most incredible I've ever seen. It's an absolutely incredible example of how the atmospheric pressure field dips in the eye of a hurricane.

Wasn't this the primary way that hurricane info was gathered a few decades ago?

And, how high do the storm clouds/winds go that they can't go up and over?
