New Year, New Mayor for Maplewood

"Frank McGehee will serve as Mayor of Maplewood for 2020; Dean Dafis will serve as Deputy Mayor."

Congratulations to both AND to Maplewood!!!

I wonder what the inner politics were this year?  Lembrich made a push to be Mayor two years ago but Dafis changed his vote at the last minute.  Then last year, DeLuca was chosen and said it would be his last year.

Now Lembrich seems to be out of the picture.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ - In a shocking move Tuesday, Mayor Vic DeLuca has been chosen by the incoming Township Committee (TC) to serve another year as mayor, thwarting initial plans that had TC member Greg Lembrich expected to take the top spot.

Why are the citizens of Maplewood not allowed to directly elect their own Mayor?  Have they ever been?

State law and the configuration of the township government.  The Mayor is not an executive position, it is more of a 'first among equals' role.

Township Committee form of government is a venerable form of government for NJ, and this Township has operated under it consistently, so far as I know.  As Mr. Weisenfeld pointed out, it's not an executive/legislative form.

Think of it as like a "parliamentary" system, if that helps. grin

The "Mayor" is simply the Chair of the Township Committee.

Years ago Fred Profeta proposed changing the form of government so that we would have a directly elected Executive. The idea was generally rejected.

South Orange directly elects a President. Maplewood's government has always functioned better than that of SO.

I don't remember Fred's proposal but I do remember when he and Vic had an agreement to alternate who was mayor.  The idea was that a TC member would not be mayor longer than one year at a time.

No actually if you study your history it has had a profound effect in the development of was to become our

society.

The great Schism of 1054 resulted in the first great splitting apart of the Catholic Church.  There were some differences in the beliefs and practices of the Western Church........based in Rome.  And the Greek speaking Eastern Church based in Bzyantium. Some of them seem pretty silly now.  Till then all Bishops representing their areas were thought of as equals.  At that point the Bishop of Rome proclaimed that he was the single superior Bishop and hence forth the ruler of the Church.

The Eastern Church could not accept that and split from the Romans..............forming the Greek Orthodox

Church

As we were growing up.........my Greek Orthodox cousins and I spent hours arguing whose church split from whose.  I was raised as a Roman Catholic.....Polish Catholic father

You asked................quoting the past is naturally easier than predicting the future.............however just look for patterns.  I don't do windows

I wasn't the one who asked. I answered. And I think you validated my answer.
