Nearby lake with hiking trails?

A friend has been posting photos of her vacation in the Adirondacks and now I have a yen to hike along a lake.

Is there any place within a one hour drive that has some hiking trails?

Sunfish Pond in the Delaware Water Gap was a great hike, and there's a number of loop trails in the park. On the other end of the Appalachian Trail in NJ the hike along Greenwood Lake before you cross into New York is also beautiful. Either is about an hour's drive.

Merrill Creek Reservoir, Rt 78, exit 4, has several hiking trails, including one that circumnavigates the reservoir. That trail is moderate, flat. There are other trails that have slight elevations. This site would be a good training site to get in condition for more rigorous adventures.

There are other reservoirs that have hiking trails but allow trail bikes. Some bikers operate their bikes in a way that is hazardous ---riding down trails that are 18" wide while yelling, "get out of the way. " to hikers on the trails.

Campbell's and Diamond Mill ponds, and the Orange reservoir,  are all w/i hiking distance of SO and Maplewood. Lake Surprise 20 minutes drive.

Hiking the west and north shores of Sunfish Pond is not fun. Also, read up on bears if you go.

We love the hike to Sunfish Pond, but like dickf3 says, watch out for the Bears.  The last time we hiked the trail we ran into three bears within two miles of the trailhead. One of them was very curious about our dog and followed us for awhile, which totally freaked me out. We've since purchased bear spray and hiking bells for our dog. I personally think they are either getting into the garbage at the trailhead or that someone must be feeding them. Also ditto the comments about hiking the west and north side of Sunfish Pond.  Snakes often bask in the rocks on the west side of the pond, and some of them are venomous.

Round Valley reservoir has trails and the wild raspberries should be ripe right now.

ETA - plus there is a place to swim there.  Swimming is not allowed at Sunfish Pond.

I hit two trails this week. One in Somerset County and the other in Sussex County. Both have wild raspberries but they won't be ripe for another week.

Second Round Valley. Trail goes right to the walk in campground.  Potable water and pit toilets there.

Carnegie Lake in Princeton has a towpath along the eastern side

Delaware River D&R canal between Ewing and Lambertville has an easy stretch of towpath as well  lots of wildlife and the river can be beautiful

Harriman is within an hour and one of the lakes along Seven Lakes Drives would be my choice.

We walk around Hessian Lake at Bear Mountain.  It's an easy walk.

it's not a lake, but walking along the river at hacklebarney state park is lovely, and always nice and cool.

Palisades Interstate Park.  Hiking on the Hudson River.

Hacklebarney has nice rocks with picnic tables along the river for a nice stopoh oh Its has been pretty dry out here so not sure how the river is.

Swartswood Lake is the 3rd largest in NJ. it's in Sussex County near Newton. Haven't been in a long time but I remember a nice beach, kayaking and walking trails. Part of NJ park system.
