Personally I'll wait for National Carrot Cake Day, coming up on Feb 3.

I would never say no to a Carrot Cake, but if I was stranded in a natural disaster and FEMA asked me which kind of cake to airdrop me, I'm asking for chocolate.
I like devil's food with a plain buttercream icing.
Well, in a natural disaster situation, one should obviously opt for the carrot cake, since it has extra nutrients.
Plus cream-cheese icing. yum.

Amen, Brother.
What? I missed it! Do over!
By the way, whatever happened to Sara Lee's Chocolate Brownies? Is it heretical to include Brownies?

National Brownie Day is December 8th. Start planning your rally now!

I have a sudden yearning....
I had a carrot cake to die for at a friend's party over the holidays. The BEST I have ever had bar none. It came from a cookbook from a Philly restaurant (now defunct) from many years back. Now I am severely jonseing for it again!
National Carrot Cake Day is next Monday. I plan to open an relevant thread unless one of you beats me to the punch.
I love carrot cake but your intrusion into my chocolate cake thread kinda Bugs me...
Wife made a killer chocolate cake when alerted about the holiday. Will have to do a little extra gym-ing but it's worth it.
Ok, maybe I will grab a chocolate cake for my office at Whole Foods when I get lunch today--a day late, but who will complain about that?

When it comes to chocolate cake, they always arrive right on time.
Here’s your emergency chocolate cake recipe: it’s approved by all the cake judges in Australia because it’s a CWA recipe (that’s the Country Women’s Association, the ultimate stamp of approval for all things baking/preserved/homemade)
https://www.abc.net.au/radio/recipes/simplicity-chocolate-cake/8926088
Non-vegan, sorry. 7 ingredients, bakes for 20 mins.
I think my earliest version of the Simplicity Chocolate Cake is in the PWMU cookbook, but in there it refers to a pioneers’ cookery book.

I bet that cookbook was the Frog/Commisary cookbook, which has an outstanding carrot cake recipe, although their Dacoise cake recipe is my favorite dessert ever!

Eek! 'Tis all in metric measurements. I'll have to do the conversions and try it out sometime.
With a fresh chocolate cake out of the oven icing is not necessary. Whipped cream from a can will do as well.
@joanne, I see your chocolate cake and raise you a vegan version.
http://spiceislandvegan.blogspot.com/2006/08/millennium-chocolate-almond-midnight.html
I've made both of Millennium's chocolate desserts. The Chocolate Almond Midnight and The Chocolate Mousse Pie with Cashew Crust.and Raspberry Sauce. Both incredible. I'm vegan but see no reason to suffer without obscenely rich desserts.
Everytime I think chocolate mousse I think chocolate mouse, the mispronounced dessert from Rosemary's Baby.
@Morganna, keep the proportions the same and just use the cups, tablespoons etc as usual. The shortening is roughly a quarter cup. It’s a moderate oven, preheated. If you’re using fan forced, you’re good to go.
Or just look up an older version/BBC version of the Simplicity Chocolate Cake
I’m looking forward to Icrecream for Breakfast Day (this Saturday, for us). Do you have that?

Thank you for alerting me to this important observance. I may be breaking out the Belgian waffle maker, since we'll need to put the ice cream on something.

Why not on a banana? Banana Splits, very retro.
Morgana, if you don't know that August 25 is National Banana Split Day, I can't help you.
One banana two banana three banana four...
Well, Sunday is Groundhog Day. Does that mean we can relive a Day of our choice?

Nope. It's the same one over and over.
It's also Candelmas, for the observant.

Sigh. I was hope for more Icecream for Breakfast.

As far as I'm concerned, any time is breakfast time.
All I (need to) do is leave a short gap between one course and the next and then, as far as I'm concerned, I'm breaking my fast between meals. Isn't that what breakfast is all about?
Here is a good sheet cake & frosting combo:
The Devils Food Cokaigne recipe from "Joy of Cooking." I hope that Rombauer grandson has not deleted it from the current editions.
Also from "Joy of Cooking": White Mountain icing. Which is a froth of whipped egg white plus a hot sugar syrup plus cream of tartar. It's a little like a zabaglione in preparation. However, once White Mountain sets up on the cake, a thin, crunchy top develops.*
A match made in heaven, by way of Ohio.
Optional:
*Once you've smoothed on the White Mountain, before it has set up completely: melt a square of bittersweet or even unsweetened chocolate in the micro or on stovetop. If you put a teaspoon of water in with the square, the chocolate will be less likely to seize up. Drizzle the melted chocolate on the frosted sheet cake, like an allover painting by Jackson Pollock. Where the chocolate has formed pools, stud the cake with shelled walnuts.
@brealer, my mother had The Joy of Cooking and gave one to me as my first cookbook. I remember baking a chocolate cake from that book. As cake mixes were so popular, everyone was impressed that I made one from "scratch."
Not starting a new thread, just pointing out that it's Ice Cream for Breakfast Day. I did indeed have a small scoop of chocolate after my eggs.
What flavour?
I eschewed eggs, or toast and indulged in a small serve of salted caramel swirl (lactose free) with my morning mug of coffee reading of the international news.
Thankfully there are several time zones across Australia, so I continued to observe breakfast time with my niece in Darwin (my morning tea time - we texted), and later I saluted breakfast time in Perth by having ice cream for my lunch...! (It was well over 30degrees C here by that time)
D savoured something with macadamia chips and white chocolate drizzle throughout. He also had some over a bowl with slices of fresh nectarine and figs.
Is Sunday Fly a Kite Day?
Today is apparently National Chocolate Cake Day.
In these times of division and strife, at least we can all agree that chocolate cake is the best cake of all. Ice cream cake might edge it out in some people's minds, but I'm talking about baked cakes. Chocolate ice cream cake is, of course, in a class of it's own.
So sorry red velvet, yellow and Angel food. Today we celebrate the king of all cakes!
