MVC Placard

Does anyone know if the Randolph, NJ MVC issues handicapped parking permit placards by appointment? I need hopefully to go there and get one.

i've always done it by mail, and they have always screwed up.  1 year they sent me someone else's paperwork inc personal info bc it was filled out wrong, the next time they punched 2 months instead of a month and year.

you may be able to get a temp one quick through PD.

Yeah, I've done it by mail too. You have to get the form filled out and signed by your doc and then you just mail it in. It can take a while though. Though I think I got my first one through the local police department, but I still needed the form. That was a few years ago. I could be mistaken about that.

Having said all that, here's the blurb from the motor vehicle web site. Looks like you can get it from any motor vehicle office, as long as you have the signed form.

=============================================================

How to apply

To apply for plates or a placard, complete the Application for Vehicle License Plates and/or Placard for Persons with a Disability (Form SP-41). There is no fee for either the license plates or the placard.

This transaction can be completed by visiting a motor vehicle agency or submitting a request through the mail. If you choose to submit through the mail, send to:

New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission
Special Plate Unit
225 East State Street
PO Box 015
Trenton, NJ 08666-0015

A copy of the vehicle registration must be included with the plate application.

Applicants without a driver’s license or non-driver identification (ID) card must prove identity by meeting the 6 Points of ID verification requirements.

Note: Wheelchair Symbol plates cannot be issued for vehicles owned by or leased to companies, organizations or groups

An Instruction Checklist (Form SP-41A) is available to ensure you have all of the necessary information to fully complete the application and avoid processing delays.

Thanks. So I guess I can go to the Randolph MVC with proper paperwork and update my current placard which will expire shortly?

can you even get an appointment?  or do you not need appointments anymore?  seriously, if you are in a pinch fill out the paper work for the red 6 month temp permit that the PD handles.

Helping an elderly friend who insists on going in person to Randolph. Was wondering if they do this at that facility and how to make an appointment as it is not clear on their web page.

this is where you schedule, there does not need to be an option for the placard.  good luck trying  to call and get someone not pissed off they have a job on the phone and is willing to think and give you accurate info.

the info on the regular mvc website may be out of date as MVC changed to limited functions per location.  ie you cant get a license and a title at the same place (just example, i dont know which offers what).

I've always had pretty good luck with MVC.  I try to be polite.  Your attitude might well bleed through and get you the response you expect.

NO< IT IS THEIR ATTITUDE.  polite never worked, even watching them with others mouthing off like they are with the homies on a street corner...b otching at a driver for filling out the form correctly when it asks for ALL medical conditions...employee b otched they shouldn't be listing medical conditions that dont affect driving...(ie should only be disqualifiers like epilepsy) and MANY similar experiences.....at best i get the sour attitude like they would rather be on welfare.

I lost the vision in my left eye when i was 5...I  had to get a medical form signed saying glasses were pointless, they marked my paperwork glasses needed...had the form fixed for my permit, passed road test, they marked my license glasses needed...and even though I was polite, gave me a sour attitude.....doesn't matter if they are young or near retirement...white, black, brown or any where in between.....its never been a pleasant experience no matter how polite I was.

I am disabled now and can't work...if I could work I would be grateful to be able to work at MVC even if it was a miserable job..and surely wouldn't be mouthing off at customers like I have gotten.

"rather be on welfare"

okie doke

Thanks for the appointment link. Still do not see where to go for a blue disabled placard. Or can you go anywhere with no appointment needed?

Try phoning.  It could save you an unnecessary trip.  Will any office that handles handicapped plates/placards work or must it be Randolph?  Flexibility in location may make it easier to do this in person.

Called today. After  90 minutes on hold I hung up.

I was poking around on the MVC website, and they have a long set of instructions about how to make appointments for different things, but naturally there is nothing for making an appointment for a placard.

At this point it looks like maybe your best bet is to get a temporary placard from your police department, and then mail in the form for the permanent one. The temp placard requires a separate form, which you can download here: https://www.state.nj.us/mvc/pdf/vehicles/SP-68.pdf

It has been many years since I needed a temporary placard.  As I remember, the key word was temporary.  I am not sure you can get a temporary placard for a permanent condition.  That said, it is worth calling the non-emergency phone number for your local police department and asking.  They are not likely to keep you on hold for 90 minutes.

yeah, calling the PD is definitely the first thing to do. The reason I suggested the temp card is I assumed he needed one immediately. When I mailed in my placard application last time it took about 6 weeks.
