I noticed it but didn't want to say anything for fear of jinxing myself. If I now get bitten I will personally blame you.goldy said:
Hope I'm not speaking too soon, but has anyone else noticed a definite decrease in the number of mosquitos this summer? We have been inundated in recent years, but so far I haven't even used any spray and have only seen one and been bitten unseen by a few.

Well, all your mosquitoes are in my yard, which has chronically been a hotbed for as long as I've lived here (except for the Essex County people who claim there aren't any). I can't walk from my car up to the back of the house in the driveway without being eaten alive.
I finally tried this: http://www.gardenersedge.com/product.aspx?p=DT150
The instructions say it holds 6 months worth of mosquitoes. I've had it about 3 weeks and it's almost full.
At least I can go out and work in my garden without paying for it 2 days later.
Interesting. So people have contact Essex County about the mosquito problem and they deny it? Is it Maplewood specific, because I can't go in my backyard without being swarmed. We haven't eaten outside in months and when we go out there to mow the lawn we cover from head to toe. They are vicious; big black/white striped ones, and yet no standing water anywhere that I can see.
I agree that, at mid-summer, i was thinking the same thing that, wow, there have been so many fewer this year. But now, I cant stand outside in the evening without being eaten alive. This morning I counted 20 bites on the back of one of my kid's legs. Mosquitos are the pits.
There has been very little rain this summer. I expect that has reduced the number. But if you happen to be somewhere where there is standing water there will be mosquitos.
They eat me alive every time I go out in our back yard. There's a nearby stream which isn't streaming very well this dry summer, and I think the skeeters are taking advantage.
That is very possible if there are some stagnate pools of remnent water.
The worst thing about these tiger Mosquitos is that they are out all day, not just at night.
I can't help but think that these may be a contributing factor - it virtually impossible for all the water to exit after a rain

I didn't even think of that, and I have one of those! Ugh. I'll see if hubby can replace it with a straight pipe.

Even worse is that they need much less water to breed in than our old fashionioned 'Merican skeeters. In all seriousness, I've read that they can actually breed in the top of a bottle cap.
I put in an online request to the Essex County Mosquito Control yesterday. They came today and sprayed half of my block!
I am at my wit's end.

They came a year ago and sprayed. 36 hours later, the Mosquitos were back
I postedp this's few weeks ago on my animal news thread.maybe there is some tips

I bought a skeetervac a few years ago, it seems to help reduce the number in our yard. Unfortunately there are number of properties near me that are either "between owners" or are not well maintained, making my efforts almost pointless.
